Not starting

I checked the ground from the battery to the block. It was rusted heavily. I backed it out cleaned the threads put some dielectric grease on, and it fired right up. I think I have a gremlin somewhere, but at least for now it's running. Will check back once I find the real culprit.

Still starting on first turn of the key. It may have been the ground connection the entire time. I am happy with the new plugs, coil and ignition.

Went another two weeks without an issue. This morning would mot spark. Fiddled with ignition, tightened battery and checked ground and it started. Second ski run it died under power and will not spark.

Only would not start after sitting 48 or more hours.
Once running it never failed to start. This time I skied and then it died as we idled out for another run.

Pulled the rotor and there is all kinds of rust on the distributor. I hate chasing a problem by buying parts, but I think this could be it. Checked ground wires and as many connections as I could and no luck getting spark. Will check where I get spark tomorrow by pulling a plug and testing the spark there and from the coil to the distributor.

I have seen the new dist. that have the coil in them. Anyone know how difficult they are to set up?

The easiest way to check for spark is a timing light. Just put the clamp around each wire and crank the engine.

If you change the distributor the only hard part is making sure the engine is at top dead center before pulling it. If you get that correct it is a 1hr job. Mark the cap (old and new) which plug goes to which spot on the cap. Firing order is stand small block chevy 18435672. If you are looking at the belt drive, 1357 is on the right, 2468 is on the left.

That is just one of those numbers I grew up knowing that I will never be able to forget. LOL! Sort of like "8675309" anybody know that one?

LOL!! Yep! Every now and then when someone asks me for my cell number, I will say that. Some people laugh and get it right away, but some will just type it in with no clue, then I look silly having to tell them it's not real. Just a nerdy thing I do. .

Thanks for the info guys. I installed a new modulator, and she runs like a top. Second day out my fuel pressure dropped and she stumbled and died. Added gas to the carb,it fired and quit. I keep a spare fuel pump, installed that and all good. The Gremlin thought he had me............... I was skiing by the end of the day.
