Building a Garage
2004 Supra 22 SSV. Height with tower up and light is 128".
We are looking to build a garage to store the boat and other toys.
It will be 30' (wide) x 40' (deep). It will have 2 12' wide doors.
I have searched several sites and was curious on what height garage door?
Is 12' door enough clearance without having to take the tower down or lower the air pressure in tires?
I have read about others disconnecting the door from the opener and having to pull it back and secure it to get the clearance.
I don't want to have to do any adjustments, just back in and unhook.
I would have ~ 1 ft of clearance between the 2 measurements, but I figure the 12' is rough opening, so if the door fully opened takes 8" away, may be tight...
Thoughts or experiences? (also posted on Supra site).

I think you answered your own question. My garage door is 10'6 tall and the boat clears it fine with the light UP. So your 12 foot high door is plenty. Your new door shouldnt be hanging down the ~24 inches it would need to for the boat not to fit.

I'm currently building a garage/shop as well (40x48x16) with 3 14' tall doors. I went with 14' doors because I never want to have a problem with getting something into the garage if my doors weren't tall enough. I found the majority of people who built garages for campers/boats/etc that had 12' doors wish they would have just went with 14' tall doors. That would be my recommendation, go with the tallest door (if you can) so there wouldn't be any issues later on down the road.

I agree with both of the above. 12 foot should be plenty but if 14 is feasible, you might as well go with the larger to cover any future issues. Hey, it's not my money right.

I concur with the 14' doors. When you sell your house there is more interest from people with RVs than there would with people with boats and towers. Who knows what the future lies in boats as you could have a surf boat with a party room/sleeping quarters down stairs with twin Vs.

Mine is 30X40, 11 foot high door. Your clearance would be fine. Love mine!

What a timely thread. I've just been wondering if I have enough time before the snow flies to get a new external garage built.
I'm not sure that I want to have enough room to fit an RV... because then my father will want to park his RV there when my boat's at the lake. The RV is near its end of life, so it might get stuck there forever. :-O2005 XLV, upgraded ballast, Comptech swivel wakeboard and hydrofoil racks, Monster cargo bimini

Awesome. Thanks for the input. I kept saying I wanted 14' doors, the builder, when he wrote up the paperwork put 12' x 12'. I thought it would be ok, but will go back and see if he just wrote it up wrong.
I love spending other people's money too. Right now I am spending my wife's money even though I am the only one working right now...
