Hi Moomba family, I havn't posted in a long time but am still loving my Outback.
I am looking to finally upgrade from the base factory sound system to one with amps, towers and sub.
My question is around the towers. What position is best to mount the towers? I have the red-a-cage tower. There are three locations that I have come across:
1. On the flat supports between the 2 tube sections of the tower:

2. On the tube closest to the stern, with exposed wiring that goes into the tube closest to the bow.

3. On the tube closest to the bow

I know that I need to run the wires down the tower closest to the bow. Am wondering for those who have the experience and have done the install or have this type of tower, what works best?
If I mount to the supports between the tubes, can I run the wires inside the support? Is there a "hole" that goes into the downtube that I need? Same question when mounting on the tube closest to the stern.
Thanks for all the help.

I don't have an Outback, and it looks like you have certainly got some good pictures of builds to go by. I am sure someone with that tower will reply. My only advice would be to consider placing them so that if you crank them up for someone you're pulling behind the boat, you have them far enough behind the driver seat that you aren't catching all that volume point blank in your ear.

I upgraded my 2007 Supra many years ago to all Wetsounds. I put Rev10s on the tower with swivel clamps b/c I wanted the option of being able to take them off - it was a nice feature. They were big and loud as it was powered by a separate amp. Easy to bang your head if you are taller - and it really hurts - your forehead will not thank you. If I were to rewind, I would have probably gone with the smaller Rev8s.
Same tower as you have. I ran new wires - port side if I recall - inside the tower.
Upgraded the size of the stock wire and added wires for LED rings.
Separate switches at the driver's seat for LED lights on the tower, cup holders, and interior speakers.
If I recall the mounting position, it was like your 4th pic.

Any other experience out there? I know there are a lot of old threads but all the pictures are gone!
Thanks in advance for the help!

my old 06 supra had a different tower design that folded inside the boat but was also called a Rad-a-Cage. it came factory with the stupidly heavy roswell 4 6.5" speaker sound bar. sounded like crap and was horribly heavy but state of the art for the time. it was also a head knocker as towers seemed to be lower back then.
this was my setup/tower but not my actual boat.
I upgraded to 6.5 hlcd's in the pod but if I could rewind the clock I would have followed mjh's advice with rev8's. I prefer the less harsh sound of the icon8's as hlcd's were not for me but rev's were all I recall back in the day. I don't think the icon's were around when i upgraded the tower sound. I'd mount on the back tab as mentioned. the other thing to keep in mind is whether or not you fold the tower so watch what they will hit. wiring for mine was ran down front tube so mounting speakers on the back tube would have left some exposed wiring from front to back tube but some good stainless wire sheath would hide it nicely.
good luck and post up what you do...
