You were spot on, Boatmate answered the email...... axle manufacturer (not Boatmate) had problems in 2002 with defective torsion cartridge.... it can not be disassembled to repair ,...

Thanks for the reply..... guess we do the other gauge route first and check electrical connections.... as I think any oxidation etc. would create some resistance and cause incorrect reading....
