For those of you without a smart charger, you can charge them full and then hook them up to a regular charger every 4-6 weeks to 'top them off'. I suppose it is debatable if that is a better method than a constant trickle charge but have done that for 20 years with zero issues.

That’s what I did 1x per month before I installed a smart charger. No issues.
