Quick question on bilge pump

Will it only function if it senses water? If I turn it on manually via the toggle switch, should it come on?

I took on some water the last time out (just enough to get the bilge pump under water). I heard the pump working but I didn't see water coming out. I assumed that on my LS, the bilge pumped out the aft port side. However, when I looked this morning it appears that it's routed to the forward starboard side. So, where does it end up pumping out?

I have the same boat. It comes out the starboard side between the drivers seat and the bow.
