Oil Changer Review - Pela 6000

I bought the following oil changer:

and used it yesterday to change the oil in my boat and was extremely pleased with the result. See my winterization post for pics of the unit in action.

I inserted it into the oil drain hose instead of the dipstick tube since I am sure that the oil drain hose will position the extractor tube at the lowest point of the oil pan. After about a dozen pumps, the oil started to flow through the tube. I pumped it a few more times until I could feel positive resistance on the pump handle. I pumped it 3 - 5 more times every few minutes to ensure positive suction continued. It took less than 10 minutes to get all 5 quarts out of the crankcase. No leaks, no mess to clean up, worked great. I would highly recommend this oil extractor.

Note that I ran the boat on the river for a good 15 minutes to get the oil nice and hot, then drove it onto the trailer, waited 5 - 10 minutes to let it cool a little, then extracted the oil right there at the boat ramp parking lot.

I like the cleanliness of it.
I have a 12v pump.. i learned on the last change last weekend to feed the hose in the drain hose like you did.... but since it has no reservoir and i do it behind the boat out the drain hole... ...still messy.. may have to try one of these...but only about twice a year for me...so... may stay with what I got..

Nice winterize photos by the way.. now I gotta print that out and go back to the boat to walk through them!!

Al, i too have the Pela 6000 and highly recommend it. I scored mine on eBay for $40 over a year ago from a wholesale auto dude.

Large enough to hold engine, tranny & v-drive fluids. I can drain all 3 without stopping to empty.

I use the same one. When I first bought it, I filled it with water 1 quart at a time and marked the quart lines so I can tell how much comes out. I absolutely love this thing. I use it on the cars to drain antifreeze from the radiator, trans fluid and the oil out of the lawn mowers. This thing holds a ton of fluid!!!
