    Default What Kind Of Oil.......

I have been looking for the 15W40 oil that Indmar recomends for the 340 HP motor. I can not find it at Auto Zone, Pep Boys, or Wal-Mart. Where are you guys finding the oil? I can I use 10W40 or 10W30? I think I am going to switch over to synthetic becuse I now have 127 hours on my XLV.

There is a lot of discussion about oil types in this fourm. Engine Nut from Indmar says it is ok to use Rotella® 15W-40 Heavy Duty Motor Oil you can purchase this almost anywhere.

I would read the entire discussion on oil that is referenced above. I would shy away from Rotella for the reasons stated in those threads, but I also would give serious credence to anything Enginenut has to say on it. Puts me in a tough spot-- sometimes you have to go with your gut- which in my case is made mostly of oil anyway so I have to trust it.

You know I am a Mobile One fanatic but truthfully any good quality oil will do just fine! Just make sure it has teh SAE rating that Indmar requires.

PS Just to let you know Walmart sells 5 quarts jugs of Mobile One for around 22 dollars.

15/40 Pennzoil diesel is the same as the marine grade. Same numbers same grade.....the same oil.

    maxpower,

Thats for the info! One car I owned had to have the 0-40W Mobile One and they never had it in the 5 quart jugs or sold it at Walmart and i would pay over 6 dollars a quart for it. My BMW had to have 8 1/2 quarts to fill it up so I would have to buy 9 quarts at 54 bucks!!! Now I have a diesel VW Touareg and it takes over 14 quarts!!!!! But I only change the oil at 10k miles so it still isn't too bad!

I'm due for my next oil change, over 130 hours now so I'm thinking of switching over to synthetic. Pros and cons? If I do, which brand and weight (?) do you guys use? I've never used synthetic, so I have no clue about it.

I just switched to the new Mercruiser Full Syn 25W-40. Ran me about $40 for 5 quarts and I got a Mercruiser Hi-Efficiency Oil Filter which ran me $15.....
Before this I was running the Mercruiser Syn Blend 25W-40
