agree
my OB LS DD whines in reverse, as do all inboards I've been on. Nothing unusual there, I would assume it's because of the transmission gearing for R

I am sure that the gears in the v drive are responsible for the noise and it is probably normal. If they are straight cut gears (not sure) then it is definetly the source, if I am wrong and they are helical cut gears you should not be hearing much if any noise. As far as noise on the DD, if the gear box is a one to one they there are no gears in forward as the drive shaft rotation equals the engine rotation and they will be totally quiet. But you must go to a gear to reverse the shaft direction and again these are probably straight cut gears and they will make noise. Straght cut gears a cheaper to manufacture but not as efficient as helical cut gears which are more expensive to manufacture. All manual transmissions on cars are helical except for reverse and you can hear the noise in a car too when in reveres.
