You know, my outback hasn't been below 180 since I bought it. My dealers mechanic even questioned it one time when he came out to fix another blown hose, and live in Wisconsin, it's not like our lakes are that warm. In fact was out tonight and is still running at 180.

My '04 OB stays right around 170. Been that way ever since I've had it.

my LSV is right around 170 or so most of the time. I have always heard that 160-180 is normal

Our Plant manager ran a mechanic shop for a long time. He said the gauges are not the most precise piece of equipment... SO my guess is they are not Perfectly accurate. I don't know if the computer your dealer can hook up to the motor can give an accurate reading... but his point was they are probably off a little which could explain differences between all of us...
My guess is if it is not rising and staying too high, we're good.

My '99 Outback was only reading around 125 for about the first 5 or 6 times I had it out after I bought it. Then a few days after it got to 200 until I started cruising it went back down to normal.
I inspected the impellar and sure enough it was trashed. Replaced that and temp gauge has been staying right at 175 so I'm not sure what was up with it before reading at 125.....

Aaron - Bet you were cruisn' the Illinois River. If so, maybe the impeller picked up some trash let through when the damn was opened. We were on the river recently and had to keep watch all day to avoid some potentially damaging debris. We launched at Starved Rock Marina and set up on the beach area east of Columbus Street bridge. Pretty interesting when the mega barges passed by. Hope you get everything worked out. - Deerfield

My 07 Outback always runs at 180. 325 horse EFI. The service guy hooked it up to the computer on the lake one day to check out my pedal postition sensor. The software said that the boat was actually running at 158. Its common for the guages to be off. I just use 180 for the baseline temp. If the boat gets any warmer I know the strainer needs emptied.
