Default Advice Needed - FAE install on a Supra SG550

    Hi Guys,
I have been wanted to add FAE to my boat for quite some time now. I recently found a new FAE in my town that was destined to be installed on a 2018 Moomba. I phoned Christina at FAE and she said that my wake plate is 5 inches shorter than the 18 Moomba therefore exhaust would be longer and would stick out farther from then transom.

If I installed a newer wake plate ( 17 vs 12 inch ) obviously the FAE would fit. Do you see running a slightly longer FAE to be be a problem until I find the longer wake plate? Would it mess up my wave?

Any other modifications I need to do if I can find a new wake plate? Software?

    Thanks all.

My concern would be a longer FAE sticking into the water causing more drag, more stress on those welded areas.

Have you considered shortening the FAE? I am sure there are some good exhaust welders who could handle the job….

I would be more concerned with the vertical height. Does it stick deeper (or shallower) in the water than it should for one designed for your boat? If not, give it a try. If you buy a longer wake plate, that may change whole way your boat planes.

Yes, I thought about shortening the pipe. In fact I again talked to Christina at FAE and she was looking into it for me. I also talked to the dealer about the longer wake plate. He suggested that the longer one would be of no benefit.

knowing that an improperly installed fae can cause a lot of issues including transom leaks and hydrolocking on top of what MJH calls out, is it worth modding a non-spec'ed unit to install below the waterline?

I would be interested in measuring (distance from hull bottom) where the exhaust exits your boat vs the exit on the Moomba the pipe is designed for.

I finally heard back from FAE. They said that modding the pipe is just not worth it. They said that there is nowhere to cut the pipe and not change the angle. The result would be offset to one side which is what you don’t want.

Looks like I’ll just order one to fit. Wait time is 4 weeks right now…

Did the SG have a factory surf pipe option?

The factory pipes are more robust.
