Raptor Fuel Consumption Curve

Does anyone have the fuel consumption curve for the 2016 Indmar Raptor engines? We are headed to Lake Powell next week and I am debating about a longish excursion and want to see if I have the fuel to do it before hand. I haven't really tracked my fuel consumption on a per hour or per mile basis in the boat other than to say that if I go surfing for half a day I need 15-20 gallons. This summer I was able to get at least 50 miles up and back with a bunch of surfing in between and was into the 30-40 gallon range each day, but this excursion will be about 60-70 miles total, so I think I am safe but given the remote area we will be going to and the time of year, I would rather not be stuck floating for a while.

Running around Norris lake without any surfing or pulls 70 mile round trip would be no issue. Water was very calm to glass and I stayed at 4000rpm or less. With the 1.5 Trans and the 15x13 prop 4000 is 20mph so 70 miles is over 3 hrs of runtime.

If you surf while making the cruise I would strap a fuel can to the platform as CYA!

For sure we will bring along extra gas. The day of the long run we won't be surfing so I will probably put a couple cans in the rear lockers just to be safe. I was just hoping for the RPM with the best fuel consumption in that 3,000 RPM range. I am pretty sure there won't be any issues, but I have done that lake enough times to know that a stiff headwind and heavy waves will chew up your gas really quickly.

I don’t know where I saw but I did see a spreadsheet that had the 6.2 Raptor peak efficiency at 3500 rpm.

not an engineer and never played one on tv but I would suspect there are wild swings in efficiency numbers between different combos of running gear, prop selection and boat hull design along with the overall payload. that doesn't even begin to mention zog's comment on wind/waves.

the engine may find it's sweet spot at 3500rpm's on a bench but real world might be 3100 in zog's boat, 3700 in larry's supra SA and 3400 in our old tige r23 due to hulls/trans ratio/prop/hull.
one day might be 2500 to go 100 miles and next day you might be able to get away with 3400 and go the same 100 miles on the same gas usage.

either way I'm jealous that you are on powell

You will never truly know how far you can go until you go! but sounds like you will be fine. And it sounds like a fun trip!

Never really thought about the distance. Pulled up the map and sketched out a path. Looks like the longest round trip we have done is about 44 miles, with some mild surfing and boarding in-between. If I recall, it took ~36 gallons to fill it back up the next weekend. So still, plenty of gas left. Cursing doesn't burn near as much as when the ballast is full and surfing.

Your Makai is fine 70 gallon tank.
His 2016 Mojo is only 40 gallons. So I understand the concern, but no ballast strictly cruising at 22-ish mph should be good.

Mojo is 50 gallons. I have been thinking it wouldn't be a problem but then I started to read a trip report from someone else and they stretched it a bit too far and it got me worried. He was getting 1.5 mpg instead of 2 mpg due to a problem with the boat he was running. I haven't ever tried to track it. My BIL just about ran his Supra SL out doing a similar excursion but was able to buy gas off of a houseboat. I really wouldn't be too worried except the mid-lake marina (Dangling Rope) was damaged last summer and NPS hasn't been able to find a replacement, leaving about 80 miles of lake (not counting the 10 miles up the other river arm we will be going to) between the two closest marinas with gas. I recalculated my trip and it will really run about 80 miles total, but I think I will be fine. I will be tossing in 10-20 gallons in cans for some peace of mind though. Hopefully in a couple weeks I will be able to send a nice shot of us passing beneath Gregory Natural Bridge.
