    Default New Board Help

In the market for a new board. Heard good things about Phase 5 so I am leaning in that direction. Love skim style, can do 360s no problem and have become pretty consistent on shovits (have to start with the fin forward though). Would like to continue to learn more tricks like big spins, airs, etc.
Seems like a lot of people say the Matrix is the best board for something like this but I also like the idea of the Hammerhead to help with riding out 180's/riding switch.
Here is my question...The skim style board I currently use is a Liquid Force Primo. Since I already have this is there any reason to upgrade to the Matrix? Primo I have is 4'10, looks like the Matrix would recommend 4'5" (53") based on my size (don't know if that would make a big difference or not). If not worth the upgrade, is the Hammerhead with the peanut shape a good board to help with learning to ride out 180's?

Have you considered the p5 MVP? From discussions on the Malibu crew forum, a number of people like the p5 Matrix, and have put it above the hammerhead. The MVP was designed similar to the matrix but with snub nose and tail. Bigger guys have said the Matrix handles like the Trident, which is a favorite of bigger guys. The MVP has been said to be very accepting for bigger guys, and allows for revert riding and easy spins.

I have no personal experience with any of these boards, but I’m looking forward to getting an MVP next spring for my b-day.

if you're interested in staying with skim style, victoria boards makes some great custom boards. I've ridden 2 in the past and were great boards. far better than the p5 examples of the day but this was a couple years ago and heard p5 churns out some great boards today.

nothing to comment on the rest of your asks as I stick with soulcraft surf.

If you are looking for a surf style, I have a few smaller boards that did not fit me. Both are 4’6”.

    Soulcraft Super AV
    Chaos Bamboo Sixer

    Both high-end board makers.

I was going to try to sell them locally so I do not have to deal with shipping.

Hadn't really looked into the MVP because it seemed like it was really pushing the rail grab channels and I haven't been able to get airs down yet. Wanted to focus more on the big spins, reverts, etc. I do like the full coverage traction pad, an issue I have now with my shovits is landing with one foot on the exposed part of the board and slipping off. May have to add that in to the mix. Thanks!

Hi Alan, yes size and weight are very important to start. Then based on riding skill also influences the type of board. For example, ph 5 hammerhead is a great big boys board but if you are doing shuvs you will need to look at different board, but again need to know your weight for sizing.
