Default Sub floor ballast bags on Supras or Moombas

Do your hulls end up stinking? When I used to pull ballast bags on my 18SA, the floor under the bags always had a wet slimy feel to them.

I would clean it up when I pulled the bags out.

Assuming the subfloor bags are not easily accessible to remove and clean??

Thinking it may just take some bilge cleaners and water swishing around while trailering then drain it.

this is the whole reason I wish the trend was moving toward tanks, not bags.

my old supra 20ssv had a bag in the center ski locker that was part of the bottom hull. that thing was disgustingly gross at the end of every season. last 2 boats had hard tanks in the rear under the floor and never once had a smell nor had to clean them out.

Always tried to figure out why the bags were wet and slimy? Assuming condensation?

As long as the subfloor bags sit on the hull, bilge cleaner and and water sloshing around whole trailering will do the trick.
I assume you can fit bags to hold more water than hard tanks.

There is moderately easy access to the bag fittings, but removing and replacing them would be extremely difficult. That said, I've not noticed any real moisture under them. They're in a spot where water from people entering the boat won't really go near the bag compartments. I have life vests over the starboard bag compartment, and ropes, tools, rags, etc over the port bag compartment. That stuff is never wet. So unless the bag or fitting is leaking, there shouldn't be any water there.

Correct - they are not easy to pull out. I was playing around last fall on my SL and thought the locker floors might come off like the transmission hatch - 4 screws in the floor and a couple on the back seat - something easy. Nope. I was going to ask my dealer, but would always forget when I was there.

But when I was climbing around a 2021 SL, I think they mounted all six of the ballast pumps all in the center. Needed a flashlight that day.

That would be sweet if the ballast pumps were even easier to service

We have an 18 Mojo and love it. The bags are fine for above floor ballast. I would pay a bit more to have subfloor tanks, instead of bags. Then, if I felt like it, I could always add additional floor bags above the sub floor tanks. Especially if they were already plumbed for this purpose. It would be amazing.

Tanks can crack. Bad bad bad situation. Bags are pulled and replaced using ropes.... and hold more because they conform to the compartment. Bags are better for a few reasons.

To clean under the belly bag, open front hatch, run some cleaner and hot water down there for a while....on a slope and out the back. Could likely do the same under side bags.

I think that hard tanks, even with baffles, would be difficult to contain shifting mass, or measure capacity with accuracy for Autowake. Plus I think cost factor is an additional reason. Bags allow for things like tubing, wiring, structural members, to be in place. In the perfect bag set-up, vacuum is necessary to remove all of the water from the bags, whereas a hard tank cannot collapse to evacuate the contents, and there would be likelihood for residual. Capacity would be lost engineering low points, baffles, through channels, etc. Plus cost!! And then, there is cost.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was hoping was accessible to thrown cleaner in there and drain
