    Default Marks On Hull Gelcoat

My boat was shrink wrapped this past winter and when I removed it, I had these marks in the gelcoat on a 3’ section of the bow just below the gunnels. It was only in this one spot and nowhere else.

There isn’t any texture where the are marks and they seem to be in the gelcoat.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas what caused it and how (if possible) to remove it?

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like a scuff, have your tried using a DA and compound to remove marks?

    Default Marks On Hull Gelcoat

I haven’t as of yet, I wasn’t sure what to use and I didn’t want to make it worse by using the wrong product(s).

    Any recommendations on specific products?

Almost looks like chaffing especially since it’s mainly on the “high spots” and edges. Perhaps they had some slop there with the shrink wrap or didn’t heat it enough and on a windy day it might have been flapping a little if it was stored outside. Just speculating of course.

There are so many compounds available, most will likely help.

Meguiars marine line of compounds is usually available in most stores.

3M, Gyeon, 3D all make marine gelcoat compounds.

If the compounds help but you still see scratches, you may need to wet sand with 1000/1500/2000 paper then polish again.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

Much appreciated. My cousin has some Chemical Bros compound and polisher I’m going to try.

I really hope they come out…

Thanks for the help and I’ll keep you updated.

Who did the shrink wrap? Any possibility they will help you out? It does look like there has been lots of repeating movement there.

The Moomba mechanic from my dealership has been winterizing & wrapping my boats on his time off for the past few years. It's one of those situations where I could put it back on him, but I just want it fixed so I will do it myself. It is just a royal piss off since the boat was new last year.

Hopefully a compound will do the trick, but I'll be prepared with some wet sandpaper (as Larry mentioned) as well when I head up to my cottage Thursday night.

I'm seriously looking into using this 'Double Up' storage cover from SewLong: https://sewlong.com/marine-canvas/storage-cover/ They have been helpful and say that it will be able to handle the snow load over the winter where I am in Ontario Canada. The only issue at the moment is if they are able to make and ship one to me by the end of September.
