"new" shoes
bought this boat a year ago and prior owner seemed to struggle with curbs. 3 of the 5 were trashed. looking at 1200 for new rims and i needed to replace the rubber so i decided to go a different route.
powdercoated them from a local shop for 500 and they mounted and balanced new rubber saving me another 150 as well.
basic but pretty happy with the results.
well see how long the coating lasts....
theyre still a little dirty from the lube they use to mount the tires but clean up nicely....
old and new
both new

Nice update. I've seen the guys at the gas station with the blacked out Silverado towing the blacked out Bu with matching moto metal 'shoes' on all of them.
I'm curious what your load rating (and boat weight) is with the 18's. I have fairly new tires and have had at least one blow out consistently the last few summers, always on the rear axle. I have to go to a larger wheel for a heavier tire so I might consider some better shoes while I'm at it.So when is this "old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?

Man, powdercoating really dresses those rims up. Looks good. Helps that you had pretty decent rim design to begin with. I have basic steel rims, not much can be done with those.

Looks much better! With the inner rim shinning again don't skip it on your cleaning process. For some reason people get offened when they show me their stuff and I point out how the wheels could look so much better. I just did a Mercedes and now have to get a new tool, they were so dirty it trashed my brush. I just got another pic from a client and asked if his wheels were matte finish, nope just DIRTY.

keep in mind not apples to apples as they were built 5 years apart and for different vendors BUT we both have dual axle boatmates. see this thread comparing mine on 18's and hak's on 14's. both boats are fairly close in base weight and his axles are rated for more than mine but the big surprise to me was that his tires are rated to handle more on the trailer than mine. keep that in mind when looking for larger rims.
