I did what Murder Max did with his......they open to the front......works great and saves the vinyl when my teems would drop them in. I did get a longer hinge then murder did....for more support.

The opening direction doesn't bother me because my compartments are fill with 1000's and only free for storage when we are not surfing for the day.

On my front cushions....I put a strap in the middle across the opening with a snap on one side. When someone opens it and it wants to fall into the compartment, the strap keeps it from falling in. Again, it saves the vinyl. When you have to put boards or something big in there, undo the snap.

I like that strap idea. Might have to borrow that.

For the front cushions....I positioned the strap a little more to the back of the boat and not centered. I found during my test....that the wider part of the cushion would want to fall in first. And from the few nicks that were from it falling in the compartment...they were more towards the back. Also....make sure the center hull side of the strap is inset enough to not be seen when the cushion is on. I made this mistake on the fronts and had to put the rubber coating spray stuff in white to have it not be seen. The center cushions in the boat (before hinges installed) the straps were installed in the center of the cushion.

First Pic: Obviously the strap with the snap

Second: How it looks when you screw up and put the hole to far to the outside edge. (on all the others before the hinges, I place one of the round stickers from office supply place to see if it was covered)

Third: Hinge like Murder Max did, but longer.

Forth: Obviously both hinged and open

FYI: I found the snap set up worked great for cushions falling in (which annoyed me and messed up two cover edges) However, the snap and the screw will put some pressure marks on you upolstry trim strip) Did it effect mine over the summer? No.....however, I was going to and still might experiment as to how I can avoid this in the long term. I do upolstry myself and always figured if there was an issue, I would be able to repair it. But I wanted to express the situation before anyone else did it. I also use screws vs. bolts like I did on the hinges. If a snap breaks, very easy to repair and put a new snap on...same location. Maybe all this helps......maybe not but it solved my stress with the teens constantly going in the compartments....especially friends who didn't know the system.

If I am not mistaken, he made the hinges. He made the brackets/supports out of angle iron.

He made the supports for the hinges. The hinges appear to be malibu/axis hinges.
