has anyone installed a check valve in the bilge line? when making aggressive turns the exit hole goes under the waterline and runs into the engine compartment

Are you doing power turns? Seems like the only time that could happen.

Yes. Some models offer a valve that goes in the outlet of their pump. Just take the hose off, put in valve, reconnect hose, done.
