Thread: Prop change

Prop puller worked fine. The hardest part was getting the cotter pin out. I had to beat it out with a crescent wrench and a screw driver. Hopefully I got it back together the right way and the shaft is ok. I hit the rudder a few times, but my main concern was the prop shaft vibrating the whole time I was trying to get the pin out. Oh well I guess we will see today. Also, can you reuse the nylon locknut? I am thinking about removing the prop again to make sure the keyway is not on the sloped part of the shaft putting the prop in a bind. It seems kind of loose after tightening. Plus I need to remove to torque properly. I am scared I may have over tightened the nut.

Also, does anyone know where I can buy a box of cotter pins online? I would like to keep extras instead of going to dealer everytime I need one.

What seems loose, the prop? Did it seat back up the shaft to the original mark? Technically, the key does not hold the prop, but rather the friction of the tapers.

You can order prop nut kit that comes with a nut, key and pin.

On a 2017 boat, yeah no issue reusing the nut.

I'm gonna make another one, this was with a 6" c clamp. It's a little long, but will work. I have a 4" clamp that will probably be better. Took about 20 mins to make. I painted that one purple.

Clever homemade tool, I really like it. Well done.

But honestly you have easily an hour or two of labor into that I am sure, plus the actual c clamp cost.

$90 pro tool is not that expensive.
