Boat is burning a lot of fuel?...

Hi all,

I have a 2007 Outback DD and it seems like I'm burning more fuel than usual. The engine is running great but I'm filling it up like crazy. I do get exhaust smoke out of the pipes but not black more like grey or white color.

I'm going through almost 1/2 tank per hour..... just cruising. More when surfing. 28 gal tank .

Any reccomendations?

Jesus. That's ridiculous. Probably needs a tune up. New plugs and wires at the very least.

Plugs were done last season. The engine only has 200 hours on it.

Hmmm. Air cleaner is clean? Not sure if that year has O2 sensors but if it does they might be going bad.

1/2 tank/hour? Wow. I would be more worried about a leak.

Have a compression check on each cylinder. Any mechanic can do one.

Are you sure you're burning that much fuel? You're putting that much fuel back in, not just reading the gauge, right? These fuel pumps are spec'd at about 60 gallons/hour. The fuel rails/injectors are obviously much more limited than a 1/2" fuel line... I'm just guessing but 14 gallons/hour almost seems like the maximum flow you'd be able to pump through the injectors into the cylinders. Are you running nearly WOT?

Just for reference, we burn about 5-6 gallons/hour while under heavy load and probably under 3 g/hr cruising and I would expect the LSV to be less efficient than the Outback DD. So yeah, if you're really burning 14 g/hr cruising then something is very, very wrong and you're not just talking "tune-up" kind of things.

Ok, I may have overstated based on the inconsistent/incorrect fuel gauge these boats have. But this last weekend, I did about 1 hour of cruising and 1 hour of tubing and I only had 1/4 left in the tank....

Tubing will use more gas than wakeboarding and surfing. Also depends on driving style.

I know those boats had the small tanks. I think they are 28 gallons? Sound right?
If that is the original tank in the boat. I assume it is.
If you were full at the start of the day, that would mean you burned 21 gals in 2 hours and 1 of those hours are cruising. Still appears high. I could see 2-3 hours of tubing to use that much gas.

The motor should be the 325.

I would not use the gauge to find out what you used
A) Fill the boat up at the pump (not using the gauge)
B) Run the boat for a day or wkend
c) Fill the boat up at the pump again (not using the gauge) and read how many gallons you used.

I would also find out at 1/4 or 1/2, when you fill the boat back up, how many gallons (not using the gauge).

Does your boat have the proper prop? What RPMs and Top Speed do you get?

If I used 8 or 9 gallons in a day I really did something. Something is wrong there
