Great Kanenoats
Personally flapper is for those who leave the boat in water, or party cove a lot.
I've had non, and currently have it, but I don't notice a differenceMalo <--- Means--Evil or Mean One. This explains a lot.

How that's even possible with the engine running?

No the flapper is to keep water from rollers going up the exhaust
If the engine is running it’s nearly impossible to backflush water into the exhaust

That's what I thought. I don't think a flapper necessary.

So I contacted FAE to try and sort out a few details prior to the group buy in december. Their response left me with more questions, but I'm sure the knowledgeable guys on here will have the answer. My question is whether to replace the muffler/baffle that they refer to in the response below. It's only $20, so it's not a question of price, its one of performance/warranty. Read their response below and let me know what your thoughts are.
"Thanks for your interest in our exhaust systems; I know you’ll love the addition to your boat. Sorry that part of our website is currently down. I'd be happy to help with your order by email or phone. A system for your boat is $520 for the brushed stainless finish, standard welds, and internal flapper FAE. Upgrading to the blended welds will be an additional $40. This is where they hand polish the outside welds for a more smooth, seamless look to the system. You also have the option of adding the cat-back system/baffle replacement to your boat as well, for an additional $20. (In regards to the Cat-back option: Many boats have a very restrictive muffler/baffle aft of the catalytic converter. The baffle restricts the exhaust diameter from 4” down to about 1-3/4”. Preliminary data suggests that removing the baffle improves engine performance. At this time we have only identified the baffle on the Indmar engine with a single exhaust outlet. If you have a different engine but are interested, look under the engine at the exhaust hose and see if there is a metal coupling tube in-line. Some boats (like Malibu and MB) have the baffle built into the exhaust outlet you removed when you installed your FAE.) **Please note that some of this pricing will change in the next few weeks.
I’ve attached pictures of similar installations for reference. For the installation, you will need Boat Life and we recommend the use of Debond (for the outlet removal of the process). Both products are available through us, or can be purchased elsewhere. If you decide to purchase this kit through us, it is $60 and includes the Debond, Boat Life, and wooden shims. We are currently running an estimated 2 week turnaround (possibly sooner).
Please let me know if you have additional questions."
