Is my engine cooling?

Just got the boat and took it to the lake for the first time. I noticed there is no water discharge anywhere and the temp was climbing to 180+. Shouldn't there be a stream of water coming out the side of the boat while running or no?

The only time water should be coming from the side is if you are dumping the ballast if it's plumbed that way or the bilge is kicked on. 180 is on the high normal range. I want to say mine runs between 160 and 180? Over 200 you're probably too hot.

you should be fine, like jtatexc said there is no water coming out the side. the water will come out through the two exhaust flaps above the wake plate at the back of the boat under water. My temp will get close to 180 and stay there for the most part. If it climbs higher then you need to check your water pump and thermostat.

Ok guys thanks. We will give it another go and see if it goes any higher. I got nervous and didn't want to risk it because we just got it and I thought I was told it would run about 160...

Yeah, its not like an outboard. There's not a tell tale water jet. Most of these inboards run between 160-180F

Not every gauge is perfectly accurate. Mine reads around 160 all the time when running. If yours runs at 180 on the gauge and you can go more than 5-10 min. without it changing then that is your "normal" run temp (at least on the gauge). Watch if it goes higher. You will know in a hurry if you are not cooling. If it goes over 200 it's time to shut down and investigate.

Hijacking the thread, but it's related... I'm used to cars holding their temp gauge like this, but on my boat the gauge is in the 135-145 range when idling, and will go up to 170 or 180 cruising. I'm wondering if my thermostat is stuck open, hence the lower readings at lower speeds, or is the lake water really cooling the engine that much?

Check your impeller and also check for flow restriction at the tranny cooler.

Sounds like a plan to me. I am not sure what parts I will need if I need to change the thermostat though. I think I know what thermostat but the gasket I am not sure about.
