Do you really need to heat the oil up by running eninge prior to oil change? What purpose does that serve other than to heat oil to run out quicker?

No, not necessary at all, but makes the process quicker because the viscosity of the spec oil is relatively high at ambient temp.

If shirtsleeve weather, and engine not run recently, I estimate it takes 90 minutes for mine to drain to a slow drip.

Actually, its much easier not hot, especially to get the filter off cleanly without burning your arm.

Most of the time when you run an engine and get it warm it is to make sure there is no sludge or moisture in the engine not just to speed up the process. New engine or old you can still get moisture in it, and sludge will be thinner and flow out warming engine is the way to go IMO.
