I used black 3/4" HDPE.
I got the material from a local guy, but he was able to ship it to me since "local" meant about an hour away through Portland traffic.
I got a 24" deep and whatever the width I was looking for. I did search and found comparable prices on amazon and ebay, but those were hit and miss. Derek was able to get me what I needed for basically the same price as online. Figure your depth and width and go from there. It's easy to work with.

Like I said, go with the HDPE. Local shop charges me about 250 for a 2x8x3/4 in white. You can get cheaper if you go with starboard. I think the lips on the original are there for rigidy and cutting them back, especially next to the brackets may bring some problems and you can go back to original of you want. You can cut down on costs by routing flutes in the top instead of foam stuff for traction.

Most say 3/4" minimum with 1" being the preferred thickness.
I am about to pull the trigger on a sheet of black HPDE to make a surf platform. My buddy just bought a new Mojo with a surf platform, I am going to make a template from his!2003 Mobius LSV GG Edition - Sold!

I'd say this sounds reasonable. I'm getting by just fine with 3/4". But I can most certainly feel it flex. Will it every break? I doubt it. But yeah, I can feel the flex and I'm 165 pounds. That said, the stuff is STRONG.
The 3/4 is a lot less expensive than the 1". choose what you can afford and what you are willing to tolerate as far as flex. if you're ever in Portland/Vancouver, I'd be happy to show you mine.2008 Moomba Mobius XLV. FWIW, I ordered 1"x24"x54" sheet of King Starboard for $189 shipped off ebay. Best price I could find for 1" and the same as most places' 3/4"
