Really sorry to hear that guys. How many hours does it have?
Depending on parts availability (and $$ I suppose) the repair can actually be pretty quick. The shop who did my engine years ago - also the one that our local dealer outsources to - said they turn around Sheriff boats with new engines overnight sometimes. My engine swap I want to say was about a week?
Season may not be over just yet...So when is this "old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?

Anyone know if it is common that after normal wear and tear 14 years 700 hours a v drive would fail?

Don't think it's common. Could be a maintenance thing from long before you owned it. Or just a short lived one from the factory. Or damage from a smack years back that gave it a shorter life span.
