    Default Board for the kids

My nephew is 11yrs old and 125lbs about 5' what would be a good beginner board for him? I have a 4'8" XXX sin city but he can't seem to pop up on it.

My three youngest (8, 5, 4) all surf our Hyperlite Broadcast skim. We do things a little differently since we never have been able to get a little one to flip the board from horizontal to vertical like we adults do. I have just had my kids lay on it like a kneeboard and move up to knees and then stand up by putting the handle down on the board for stability and standing up one leg at a time.

Here's a video of the 8 year old last summer on Lake Jocassee in S.C.

Actually this is probably not the best example as at this point she had used that method so many times she was shortcutting a lot of the steps I outlined above.

The video link above shows a little better demonstration of what I am saying. This is the 5 year old in 2012 shortly after her 4th birthday.

I got my 14 year old son the Karma from Day One - He tried out a lot of boards at the Southern Surfest - This was his pick - He started learning last year.

That looks like a good idea might give that way a try next time out
