Default Flooding in Calgary and Southern Alberta Canada

I know most of you guys down south have been complaining about Drought and lack of water etc. We up here in the Far North have been complaining about the winter that would not go away. Well now we have new problems. Here in Calgary Alberta and a few surrounding towns are being Absolutely FLOODED.

We have had ,freeky rain for the last couple weeks ,but ,in the last couple days the amounts have changed 10 fold. Most of this rain is/ was just up against the mountains and now is flooding back down all the major and minor creeks in the area. This is even before the Snow melt ,has even started.

Up to 100 thousand people had to be evacuuated from there homes , A small town (Highriver) is in Totall evacuation and nearby towns and citys are on standby.

We are two weeks away from Calgary Stampede, which next to NFR is the second biggest /highest paying rodeo in the two countries. The Stampede grounds which border our downtown belt line is under up to 10 ft of water. The Scotia Saddledome eour NHL Calgary Flames play, has water in the bowl up to nearly row 14.The Downtown core which borders A Major and a controlled minor river. Was in total evacuation ,yesterday sending Thousands that work or live downtown to LEAVE. Underpasses and train tunnels are full or completely submerged.

There has been nonstop media footage ,showing some spectacular sites and some of the devastation, including Fire dept jetboats running up and down streets etc helping people get out. Extra police have been sent in from Edmonton another Alberta city, and 1500 Canadian Army(Mostly Engineers) have come to help evaluate and help fix ,or repair....

I have grown up here all my life, and we have had a couple other big floods but Nothing close to this.

I would post pics ,but there is so much on the Web and youtube etc that its easier to see some of this this way.

On top of all this sadly my boat has YET to be used this season as the weather and commitments etc have prevented me using my boat, This was gonna be a ski weekend ....SADLY NOT. And no i would destroy my boat if i tryed running around town,so don't go there please.

Thanks KRAK. While we are not in harms way at all ,there are others who are going to be devastated.

I work in NEW Home costruction, which likely will not be affected, i can just imagine anyone in restoration and or reno work are gonna be swamped.

We are not the worst by far. The whole town of Highriver,is/was under total evac, They are gonna need help. We have relatives ,down there and likely ,i may be heading down when i can to help.

    Hey Mike,

Red Deer is all praying your all the south. We have a few evacuation notices, but nothing compared to you. Red Deer River is running fast and is full with minor flooding in some low laying areas. Now we have to worry about the communities downstream of 3 major rivers. Hope all goes well for them and damage is limited. My girls are getting together some toys and clothes to ship down to Calgary and the other communities. At 4 and 8, they are shocked at the devastation.

It's terrible absolutely terrible. Drumheller is the newest community starting to flood now too. We crossed North Sask river yesterday in Edmonton on west end and I was shocked to see how high it is and what's coming down the river?

People will comeback and feel pride in beating the elements but wow this is going to test people like crazy!

Any word on Predator Bay Mikey? Can't see a pro stop happening there if the river has done the damage it has in town..........must be worse out there?

Also a Calgarian all my life and Calgary Firefighter who worked 2 nights shifts during the flood, I can say this is the most devastating event I have ever seen ( I also was in Slave lake when 1/3 of the city burnt down). I live no where near the flood zones, rather up in NW, but to see so many people crying and the grief in the eyes of home owners, sent me home with tears in mine..I went straight out to my recreation property to which backs onto the Red Deer river( another river which caused major flood damage) and flows into Dickson Dam to where I use my Moomba....It flooded everything around use and shutting down the roads and bridge next to us, we only have silt over the lawn and all buildings were spared any damage...I too have not had the boat out yet, and next weekend was to be the first...But now the reservior will be full of trees and junk, that boating will be delayed... in the mean time I will be helping both on shift and off shift to bring our great city back together again....So those already out on the waters surf a good line for me......
