Default Cleaning threads of block drain ports and transmissions drain plugs

After putting back the plugs on the block and transmission from winterization I noticed they were heavily crusted with rust and had a hard time threading them back in. I was able to clean them enough to get the plugs back in but they don't go in very deep and didn't want to reef on them hard in case they were going to ruin the threads.

What do you guys do to clean the threads? Do you use an SAE tap and re tap them carefully to clean out the rust etc?

Run a tapered pipe tap in the hole. Do not cut the treads deeper, just clean them. Next fall, coat the threads with grease or vasoline to keep the rust off.

The store sells thread taps and thread cleaners. You want a cleaner, they look very similar. Use it to clean out the threads and put grease or vasoline on the thread cleaner to keep the stuff in the goop and not in the head.

Anti-sieze the plug threads to help prevent corrosion.

Anyone know off the top of their head what size it is? 1/4" NPT?

If you use a 9/16" wrench to take the plug out, which I believe is true, then yes it is 1/4" NPT.

I would coat the threads both the plug and the hole w/ never-seize after you clean the threads.

Why do you leave them out all winter? I take mine out, and after it drains I put them back in

I didn't, dealer took out all the plugs and left them in the cup holder all winter. I only noticed when I went to go summerize the boat this year.

That way they can justify a paltry to exorbitant summarization charge.
