Lake Amistad at Historical Low (pics)
Check out these 3 images of Lake Amistad along the Rio Grande River out in Val Verde County. After Hurricane Alex flooded the Rio Grande in 2010 the Lake rose to around 1130 ft in July of 2010. Almost 3 years later, the lake has dropped nearly 75 ft to its current record low pool of 1056 ft.
"We are deeply concerned about Amistad’s record low levels, but we are even more concerned about the severe impacts that Mexico’s refusal to meet its obligations under the 1944 Water Treaty is having, not only on Amistad, but on the entire middle and lower Rio Grande Valley,” said Carlos Rubinstein, commissioner for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The dam gates are still open on the Mexican side letting out 18 inches of water a day.... I hope they stop soon or we won't have any boat ramps open. As of today, only TWO of the EIGHT boat ramps are still operational. Sad stuff down here....
