Transom remote install
1st: I located the existing driver side remote plug under the dash and unplugged it and slid the wires from the new transom remote into the stereo side of the plug and made sure it was compatible. It controlled the stereo so all was good.
2nd: I ran the (4)wire down the starboard side gunwale leaving it loose so I could go back and adjust length.
3rd) I wired the 4 wires to the existing plug-in under the dash. This is being shared with my automatic volume control. Then I rechecked the transom remote at the aft end of the boat to make sure everything was still working.

4th: Tape gel coat. Drill small pilot hole with standard drill bit. Then with a Forstner drill bit start to drill, very slow speed with medium pressure, the underneath of fiberglass using the small drill hole as a guide. Once you have cut about 1/16" into the fiberglass then start on the outside. Again using the small drill hole using the Forstner bit in forward direction drill very slowly into the gel coat. Once you are through the gell cut you can speed the drill up slightly until all the way through the fiberglass. By back cutting the underneath you don't have to worry about splintering the fiberglass.

Then continue with smaller holes with a standard drill bit in reverse until you are through the gel cut, then continue in foward until you are through. Remember to measure multiple times before drilling. Holes are pretty much permanent. I also use a vacuum while drilling holes to keep the fiberglass dust from going air born.

5th: Make sure to chamfer all holes to keep the gel coat from spyder webbing as time goes by.

6th: Add a small bead of silicone around the gasket of the remote and tighten to back of boat.

7th: Wire the connection at rear transom remote. Go back and attach remote wiring to existing loom in the gunwale.
8th: Enjoy new remote!!

Total time about 1 1/2 hour.

Nice clean work! I'll be curious how yours holds up to the elements. I mounted my Clarion remote in a similar location. Took a few years of sun and splashing but the red turned to pink, the black to more gray, and finally the LCD display filled with water before it died (so much for waterproof!).
The month before it gave up completely I had demons in the stereo - would randomly change tracks on a CD or change radio stations. Or switch from Stereo to CD to Aux. Unplugged it and everything was fine again. So when is this "old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?

Thanks for the sticky status...
I do have a back up that I removed from the helm last year just in case. But it is white and I was't to fond of the looks of the white remote on the back of the boat.Last edited by harmsway; 02-22-2012 at 09:16 PM.
