RPM Gauge Not Reading

Last year, my RPM gauge stopped reading but the boat worked fine. According to my boat tech, everything checks out except the signal from the ECM to the RPM gauge. When he winterized the boat last winter, he removed the ECM and send it to Indmar for "re-flashing". That did not fix it. According to Indmar, my only solution is the replace the ECM at $1600. Any thoughts or suggestions.

One thought. Give us some information on your boat as my 1998 has different parts then the new ones.
