    Default Surfing Distance From Boat

I am still trying to figure my boat's wake out. So I was wondering how close to the swim platform do you typically get when surfing? I suppose what is the closest and furthest away you should be while surfing? I suppose it is a loaded question because alot of it will depend on the amount of ballast. Just a general consensus I suppose. Thanks.

I surf about 5' - 20' from the swim platform. Here's a vid of me last summer behind my LSV to give you an idea. 750 in the rear locker, 400 in the ski locker, wife and two little kids on board, 10mph, wake plate all the way up.

    My 06 xlv likes
    Port or left
750 to 1k in rear locker
680 under left seat to battery location
400 on top of left seat
    1180 front locker
11mph. Plate half to all way up
May need some ballast in right rear locker so boat won't cavitate.

    Right side or starboard

    1100 right rear locker
400 or more in left rear locker
    400 under seat behind driver
    1180 front
11.7mph, plate 3/4 to all way down

that's really close to my setup with my XLV before I sold her. Regular side wake was much better and easier to setup. On the goofy side I filled the opposite V-drive sac 200-250lbs as well to give the wave more push.

I often started off my platform and surf back up to my platform...so that saying, I would go from 0'-20ft but usually stayed around 5'-15' on goofy side. Regular side my friend can go way back to 20'-25' because the wave had better shape and cleaner.

For some reason any further back than 6' I cannot stay in the wake. I dont know how ya'll are getting back 20'. Thats almost the entire length of my surf rope.

Usually just more weight up front-- lengthens the pocket.

Me thinks more ballast = bigger/longer wave = more distance.

Bigger/longer board = bigger sweet spot = more distance.
So when is this "old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?

I generally am running 1,100 to 1,400 lbs in my Outback on the goofy foot side and I am surfing from 4 feet to about 12 feet behind the platform. I am actually going to try to stretch it a little this weekend by adding some extra weight to the front to spread it out a little and see what happens.
