Impeller Replacement

Hi ALL,

Thanks for all the great info on this forum.

Going to replace my impeller for the first time and wanted to make sure I have the process down. It is on a 07 Outback DD.

1. Open housing
2. Pull out old impeller; could be a bit tricky, but bump the starter and use needle nose and it should come out!
3. Put new one in, making sure its on the correct side. DO I HAVE TO LUBRICATE? If so, Where? How? With What?
4. replace gasket. Do i have to lubricate?
5. Reassemble housing.
6. Done?

Make sure you check the hoses around there, t-stat, for rubber shavings from the old impeller. You want to make sure you get all of the old stuff out, that you can.

The manual says that it can be stored coated in petroleum jelly, so I use a bit of that to help it slide in the pump housing easier.

We replaced our impeller this weekend with a Johnson Pumps 812B and the instructions said only use the glycerin lube that came with the impeller. It also said do not use petroleum jelly as it can damage the new impeller. This was news to me,we have always used petroleum jelly in the past.

petroleum based lubes break down rubber over time. That is why you aren't supposed to use Vasoline with condoms. I can't see any reason not to use it on an impeller as the impeller has such a short lifespan. Over years, I can see a breakdown but you should not be using the same impeller for 5+ years.
