Default Stupid (sort of) battery charger question

I just picked up a battery charger to keep my batteries topped off until I get an onboard charger put in. The instructions that came with the charger suggest to ground the negative cable to the chassis. What ground location do you guys use? Also, what position should my Perko switch be on?

I've got a few ideas but I don't want to blow up my new stereo

If you are attaching the charger leads directly to the battery, it does not matter what the Perko switch is set on.

As far as grounding the negative cable to the chassis, that is for cars since cars have a metal chassis. That doesn't apply in a boat application. So just plug in your charger and attach the positive and negative leads directly the battery and you're good to go.
