Help: Which one? New 2008 obv or xlv

found a obv for 33.5K and a xlv for $40K. Both new. Which one? xlv has more options, but the price of the obv seems really good. Any thoughts? Plus, what is the difference between a gravity 1 ball. system and a gravity 3? The obv has the g1 and the xlv has the g3... Which system is better and why? Is there a difference in the fill times as well? Also, what is the purpose of the water strainer? I will probably have some more questions, as I am researching like mad and want to be well informed before dropping that kind of $$ on a boat.

Hey Trevor- welcome to the forum. Both are great boats- sounds like a good price for each. I picked up a 2008 OBV last summer and love it. Part of the reason I went with the OBV is because I like to ski and the lighter and shallower OBV is a great crossover boat. Note that 2008 was the last year before the OBV went to a shorter, deeper, and heavier hull.

If you looked at them both up close I'm sure you noticed the size difference. Most here will tell you to go with the G 3 ballast. When I got my boat in July last year I didn't think I needed G3 ballast but by August I was glad I had it. There's not really a difference in fill time between them because the G1 uses 1 pump to fill a 400# bag in the ski locker compartment and the G3 uses 3 pumps- one to fill each 400# bag in the ski locker and both rear compartments. The G3 give you a nicer wake and also more control over the shape.

I am fairly new to the forum and not the best resource here, but I can give you some of my thoughts.

OBV is just under 21 ft. The seats are a little lower than the XLV, which may or may not be an issue for you. The OBV puts out a pretty nice ski wake, especially with the wakeplate. OBV can still put out a nice wakeboard wake, but GIII and wakeplate are a must for that. What will you be using the boat for?

XLV is 23ft long. Bigger boat all together, wider and deeper. More of a wake boat, still can ski with of course, but most dedicated slalom ski boats are 20 ft or under. Since it's bigger, more people fit and bigger storage compartments. Is the a bigger boat worth the extra money to you? It costs more, but you get more.

GI is one 400 lb center ballast bag. Bag is located in the ski locker. GIII introduces two 400 lb rear locker bags along with the ski locker bag(1,200 lbs of ballast), hence GIII for three bags. Fill times, hmmm this could open a REALLY big can of worms. I will say that GI will fill faster than GIII since you are only filling one bag. GIII a must if you want to do some wakesurfing.

Water strainer is just a filter for the ballast system. It keeps debris from clogging the sprinkler valves, the valves that open to allow the bags to be filled separately. Both GI and GIII use one main water pump and the sprinkler valve/s are there to stop/allow water flow when you turn the switch on to fill a bag/s.

Hope that helps. Either way, both are solid boats that I am sure you would be happy with.

I say XLV 23' big boy boat with a big boy wake! You won't be dissapointed! If it were me and I got the 21 with the G1 ballast and passed up the 23' with G3 ballast the XLV would always be in the back of my head. Honestly if you get OBV your gonna wanna upgrade to the G3 so I wouldb do it right the first time. Go with the biggest and best wake producing boat Moomba makes! You won't be sorry! But then again I have an XLV and when it's on the water by 21' boats the size dif is just silly. That's my 2cent's either way though both are a good buy.

XLV period. Space, ballast... I could go on and on but you'll never look back if you have an XLV.

Also, to be perfectly honest, I have an OBV because of cost. I would take a XLV in a heartbeat, but it is not in my budget YET . I tell myself that I have an OBV because I like to both ski and wakeboard, which is true. However, I could ski behind a XLV just the same. I'm a long cry from a professional course slalom skier.

Just my 2 cents. Get the XLV if you can, and yes you will want GIII!

I will be getting the specs on each boat next week to look at. I will post again once I have them with more questions (ie: difference between this and that etc...) Thank you in advance... Either way I think we will be happy... Just don't want to pass up a really good deal on a XLV (if its a smoken deal). This is a NEW boat that never sold due to recession etc... Going into the 2010 boating year, the dealer wants to blow it out... I assume the $40K is a really good price for it (as is the $33.5K for the OBV). I will more once the specs come in to know for sure... I will post for more info shortly.

That's a great deal on the XLV. I paid 41k for my new '08 and it only had GG1 but got the dealer help out on the GG3. The boat is huge and I love mine. In rough waters the extra boat is nice and you don't feel crowded even with 8-9 people.
