I can slip boards under my passenger side helm on the Makai pretty easily. Doesn't lock, but definitely out of site.

Did you actually get any pics or videos of exactly where the water is coming in at? It looks to me like the shredded rope wrapped around it could be getting in the rubber shaft seal and causing it...
Not doubting you, but are you sure the tank is cracked and it's not a fitting or hose that is leaking? Most of the time fittings are the culprit.

Are your surf tabs both fully retracted? If one is slightly deployed, it can cause the boat to pull as you increase speed. This forces you to countersteer in order to maintain a straight path.
