Your shut off valve needs to be before the strainer so you can shut off the water flow and be able to open the strainer and clean it. That is its only purpose for being there.

Mc, photo's are not needed as there is no shut off valve, it's thruhull with a 90 elbo and then a big hose to the transmission-no strainer.
Your 3rd photo looks just like mine.
Thanks moombadaze, I looked at the 09 manual and no mention of the shut off valve. I assume it is not there either.
