thanks for the info. Also I'm 185lbs if that makes a difference and in pretty good shape. Wife is 112lbs so will she need a different board also?

Maybe aim for a board that's like 4'10 to 5'0. you'll likely be able to share it for a while. Then when you're both good enough for it to matter, you can start looking for something that suits your style/skill.
there are really 4 big things that factor into surfing....
- Boat
- Ballast
- Board
- Rider skill
to some extent you can compensate for weaknesses in one area with strengths in others. If you get stong representation in all areas, then you're rockin'.
brought my twin boys for a tube at 8.5 months old... ;)
of course we went like 2 mph.. and only for like a minute each...lol
but they didn't mind it! ;P
