2015 Moomba Mondo drive submerged

I’m currently 28hrs from home and not going to be back there until Friday. My son sent me these photos today of how much water was in the boat.

He and the neighbor pumped it out and checked the engine oil. No water there…phew! They did not check the transmission or vee drive oil. I’m worried water made its way into the trans or vee drive through the vents.

Wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Should I be worried about water in the transmission or vee drive? Appreciate any solid advice…or other people experiences.

This will be the first thing I check when I get home, but just wondering if I should have them check tomorrow?

I would check my automatic bilge pump too. It shouldn't let it get that deep.

Yes…plan to do that also. It was working when I left. Not sure why it didn’t pump out. It was left in auto.

first thing I'd add is another bilge. $100 is cheap insurance.

First off, wow. How does this happen? Rain or a leak?

Second, the only way to check the fluid would be to pull a sample from the bottom. A long straw, oil extractor, etc. to see if you can get water out of the cases (oil floats). Worst case changing those fluid are not hard to do with an extractor.

Third, sandm is right, a second bilge pump or at least a new one. Check you batteries and bilge circuit also. A blown fuse could be the problem.

The boat is new to me. I work away 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. Was able to use the boat for 5 days before I left. Bilge pump worked great, noticed it cycle as people were in and out of the boat and water accumulated in the bilge. I put the cover back on and left the boat tied to the dock…very explicit instructions for my wife, kids, and neighbors to check the boat often and especially if it rained. Obv no one checked it until they found it in this condition.

The auto function of the bilge pump obv failed. It does work in manual as that was how they were able to pump the boat out. Battery is fine as it started the boat after pumping out the water and checking the oil. Have already ordered a new bilge pump. Neighbor says after they pumped it out, they checked it 3-4 times through the day and no more water accumulated, so no leak. It must have been rain water accumulation. I do have the center sun pad off as I’m having it re-covered. Not sure if that let more rain water enter??

As I’m not with the boat to check it…I was just asking for other peoples experiences. If I should be concerned about the transmission and vee drive having water? If I should get one of my neighbors to check it? Or if it’s ok to wait till I get back home in 3 days?

Water in the V-drive or trans it won't hurt it to wait 3 days, just don't run it around the lake. Definitely make sure when you get there the oil is oil and not milky water mix, or just change it for good measure. The Mobil Delvac 50 for the V-drive can be found a Grainger Industrial supply if you have one close by or order from Amazon today and have it waiting on you when you get home.

The bilge pump has me questioning mine also (my boat is the same age). Works in manual, but if the float switch is bad, I guess this is what happens. The sun pad not being on did not help but if you got that much rain, then the water would have found its way in regardless. Hope everything turns out ok and you can keep enjoying summer. Might want to use some spray lube on your steering cable once you get it all dry. The lube can get washed off and it will make steering hard later in life. It was under water behind the engine.

Yep....same as my 2015 Mojo.

The red sticker in your picture of the submerged V-Drive..."Mobil Delvac Synthetic" - oil you need to change it.
Transmission is Dex 6

Oh crud! I don't pull my plugs on our lift either for fear of if the boat ever fell in. Best of luck, everyone gave great advice.

Working on a lift now, but my water depth at the dock is less than 3ft. Trying to figure out what lift, minimum depth, etc and then find the right one is proving challenging.

At our dock, we have an overhead cable lift as well as a lake bed mounted hydraulic. Was thinking I saw a shallow water floating hydro hoist style lift for sale. 3' is just over your boat draft. Are you able to build out any further?

No…not cost effectively anyways. And cannot build a permanent structure as must be removed in winter when the lake freezes.

I can go 400 yards out of my cove and only see 5ft.

That happened to me once. Your tranny and V drive fluid need to be changed, and if your starter is located at the bottom of the engine like mine it is likely toast as well. Otherwise it should be fine.

Thanks! I plan to check the trans and Vee Drive when I get home. Good news…That’s tomorrow!

Starter is ok…neighbor already started it and charged the battery.

I have the same year Moomba Mondo. I went with a floe 6500/8000 lb lift with the tilting Maxis lift. I also looked at the Rapter lift specifically made for shallow water.
However, I could not get anyone with the company to return my calls, so I went with the Floe Maxis because of the tilt feature and decent shallow water capability. I also ended up having my slip dredged out to increase the depth to over 5 feet. Highly recommend the Floe Maxis as you can also purchase wheels to add on to roll it out of the water and back in each season.

Please keep us informed when you find out the issue with your boat. Sorry this happened to you. I had about four inches in mine last weekend because the piggyback ballast bag under the bow seats sprung a leak in the hose as it comes up into the compartment.

Will do! Thanks for sharing your lift experiences. Unfortunately the entire west shore of the lake is like this and dredging is not allowed. The like is 900 acres total.

I should be able to check the boat out Friday am. Lol…my wife and son both check it twice a day now and report out what they find. So far only water when it rains!

Oh and wife pick up the sun deck cover today. Came out great! Anyone wanting new seat skins…I highly recommend contacting you dealer. 100% original materials back to 2015 model year.

I did not do this in my case, but in some boards I reviewed when dredging is not allowed some folks have used high powered power sprayers to move a little bit of dirt around. You can also remove the pads on the lift and sink the legs supposedly. With the Floe lift you can then adjust each leg without raising the entire lift so you can relevel as needed. I had a lot of questions related to the floe lift and I even had one of the VP's at the division call to answer them. They are really helpful.

Well, got home today and was finally able to check everything out. Neither the drive nor the transmission had any signs of water but I changed them anyways.

My bilge pump does not operate in manual mode with the master switch off. The auto function is not working at all now. Will be changing that out tomorrow.

My transducer was leaking slightly, I had pulled it to clean the paddle wheel and torn a gasket. Thankfully I was installing a new transducer anyways so had all new pieces for that.

Install my newly recovered engine hatch and took the boys surfing!

All is good…let summer begin!

Glad nearly all is well. Check tranny fluid and make sure it is not milky after your surf sesh. Its tough to tell if water got in it when extracting first time. This happened to me once and it took 4 or 5 transmission flushes before I got all the water out but hopefully that will not be the case for you.

Might consider "tenting" your boat cover with a collapsable pole in back of cockpit. They sell them cheap and I run bungy cords to top of window mounts and from back cleats all connected to top of pole to keep the cover from collapsing in center when there are heavy rains. I also try to lift the boat so that it has a slight lean towards bow so that if water does get in, it collects more there to keep back of bilge where steering cable, starter, tranny are as dry as possible.

Check the battery area, you may have missed a cable, the auto bilge operates directly off the battery.

Took the bilge pump apart and found some debris around the float. It is working in auto now. FYI it was very dirty, cleaned the float and it’s working well.

Periodic checking of the bilge pump is a must. The pump will jam up sometime. I never figured out where the little crap comes from but it doesn't take much.

Update:

Bilge pump jammed and tripped the breaker. Founda piece of rubber that looked like for the serpentine bent jammed in the impeller. Also the auto feature works great when bobbing around the lake but does not work at all when sitting calmly beside the dock and filling slowly. New bilge pump will be here tomorrow.
