Let’s talk slamming the Max!!

Looking at trading my Mondo for a new ‘19 Max. I’d love a G23 or RI237 but simply don’t want to pay that much for the 30-40 hours per year I put on my boats. The Max, when loaded up, looks pretty good, but yet again I know I’ll have to upgrade the ballast. What is everyone doing? I looked at the WMers 1750lb per side upgrade and saw the video, massive wave with a nice clean lip. Think I’d go that route but am also wondering about the front? I hear it’s a 1000lb hard tank? Any way to add a piggyback up front or is it needed?

The front is a 1000lb bag under the floor and I piggy backed a 500 lb bow bag off the vent lines.

I am running Wakemakers 1280s in the rear and 900lb Ronix bags under the side seat, connected front port is the locker bags to rear port of the underseat bags. I drilled a pass thru in the bulkhead but if I am correct there is already a hole in the 19s. I have an 18.

Pat if you get a new 2020 max they will already have 500# side seat bags with a panel over them like the Makai does vs the 2019s. So not as much as WMs kit but retains some storage. Of course you can probably get a deal on a left over 19 or wait till boat show deals on a 2020.

My 19 didn’t have holes for piggybacking the midship bags. Maybe the newer 19s do, not sure.

As far as bow weight, I have 400# in lead up there but really don’t see a need for much more unless you have a really big crew. The max really likes rear and midship weight. I have stock rears, then midship I have 300#lead each side plus 730# bags each side. Even with that weight and only 400 up front, my pitch is right around 9 degrees without emptying any ballast in the rear.

Deals on 19’s are what is drawing me in. I can get a very well equipped one for just over 100k here in Canada. Going to look at it next week, wife isn’t sure she likes it.

Regarding the wave, does it need to be listed to get a good wave on each side or do the tabs take care of that for the most part?

The wave is just fine evenly weighted although sometimes I drain the off side to 95% to create a little list. Autowake creates a slight list if you are using that feature.

I am running stock bags with 1100s in the midship lockers. I am now upgrading to WM 1200's for the rear. I also run an upgraded 2419 prop for surfing ( would not suggest for Wakeboarding and for sure no tubing as you will just over rev the engine.)

The Max is a rear weight boat.

Current Struggles:
1.The Max will throw a huge wave, but I cant get it to throw that "Supra" huge clean long wave. I get low/Long/clean or Huge/short/little foamy

2. Autowake- Kicks my ass every time. It's "auto ballast dump" for me. I cant seem to get the nice wave without crew on surf side, and then AW dumps all the ballast on me. - More testing and tuning.

3. I find the display is extremely difficult to use while underway. Especially for Roll control. I wish there was just a fast, simple switch to adjust the surf plates. Don't get me wrong, its there, just cumbersome.

4. Larger crews- Several times I have had the boat LOADED with people. You would think this would give the optimal wave. It seems to have a negative affect for me. While the wave is BODACIOUS, I am not able to get it all that clean.

That said, I really enjoy the Max. It gives me everything I need in a boat. It is spacious, Comfortable, Surfs very nice and for a new purchase, I feel it would only be bested by buying something "Nicer" used.

The more info the better! How does the boat surf in chop? My Mondo’s wave breaks up when I go over other boats waves, I’m hoping a bigger, heavier boat will handle that better.

I find that all wave break up in chop. This is the Max from a quick session last night. I make these short video clips so i can go back to stare and compare.

For fun, I will add a video of my neighbors boat. We call it "The Budget Boat." It's 2008 Supreme V232 with about 4000lbs ballast and homemade suck gate. Waves are always deceiving on camera, but this is our Bench Mark wave with we judge most others by. The Budget Boat always has a nice wave.

Our current talking points is whether the Moomba surf plates produce the same quality of wave as the Malibu/Axis style does. I have yet to try my Mission Delta on the Max, but want to try that for fun just to see what the wave does.

OK. I’m struggling pulling the trigger on this boat!! I really don’t want to get into adding too many things as my wife is already giving me the gears! Lol. In reality, if the ‘19 has the necessary 2 ports on the stock rear bags for midship connection, will adding a couple 550-600 pound midship bags be adequate? I realize the more the merrier, but I just don’t want to start down that road. What is the biggest bag that will for midship? Do I need to vent the midship bags?

Yes adding 500 lbs midship would certainly help and gets it to the level of a 2020 Max with the optional midship. Many people run 720-750 lb bags in the midship and have a little room on top of some storage. You could probably fill an 800 in there but wouldn’t have storage on top. Flienlow has 1200 lb bags midship in his Max from his previous boat but doesn’t fill them to capacity. Yes you’ll need to vent them. Interesting conversation I just had with the designer of the Wakemakers ExactFIT 1750 upgrade kit. He says the stock bags are listed as 900's but are closer to 750 in reality. He said a lot of bags are "over rated" in capacity numbers. The 550 pound midship bag in the kit fits "exactly" in that location and sits about 2-3 inches short of the heater hoses and fills pretty much right up to the cushion. He also said the 19's no longer use vent hoses but an air release plug, that's the reason he has 4 on the locker bags and 3 on the midship bags. Interesting for sure, the pics I've looked at show numerous vent holes on the '19 Max so I'm not sure about this. All this means I'd lose the locker trays and I'm not sure my wife will be happy about that. Apparantly everyone who has used this kit hasn't looked back, the wave is suppose to be stellar. I guess I have some thinking to do.

I wouldn’t doubt the bags being overrated. Although everyone I’ve heard from says all 3 stock bags in the Max are 1,000.

Personally I’m very happy with my combination of stock bags, lead, and mid-ship bags, and still using the 3 treys. With how much stuff we take on the boat with us, I couldn’t do without the treys now that the midship is full.

The bags in 19s are definitely vented. I tied my midship vents into the stock vent lines and have no issues with trapped air.

This might be the ticket then. Do you have a link to the bags u ordered? They have the dual ports I assume and the stock bags had dual tie in ports?

I have these wakemakers bags (45”L x 20”H x 20”W). I don’t have a heater so that’s not an issue for me.

Excellent, thanks. Did you use 90 degree fitting on that midship bag? Those ports look like they're at a downward angle as opposed to on the side.

Nope. Just straight connections then 2 short hoses through 2” holes in the bulkhead. Trickiest part is just figuring out the right sizes for all of the connectors. The stock bags have different sized connections than the WM bags.

What are the chances you could supply me that list?:-D I'm in Canada and want to order all the parts from WM if I pull the trigger on the Max. Might save me a few days figuring it all out.

I think this was everything I needed, although I did end up with a couple of extra connections before I realized the stock bags had a different size outlet, and quite a bit of extra hose.

Has anybody added a bow bag under the front seats and tied it into the center bag? I was thinking about adding a front bow bag but didn't want to fill it up manually. So I could either add a new pump or just tie it into the center bag like the midship bags are tied into the rear locker bags.

The only challenge is getting to center bag to hook it all up. Curious to see if anybody has any experience doing that. And has anybody seen the center bag to see if it even has any additional ports on it. Thanks!

I can't remember where I saw this posted recently, either on the FB group or on here, but I saved the image at the time. The person who posted said WM hasn't put this online yet but I haven't checked to see if it's on their site now or not This would tie into the center/bow ballast I believe. This would eliminate all of the bow storage though so if possible might be best to use lead bags instead and keep most of the storage.

Thank you, I will check it out. Yea, one of the reasons I bought the Max was for the storage and yet it seems little bit by little bit it is all disappearing. I am just hesitant on using lead because I trailer the boat and didn't want to add more tongue weight to the trailer. My truck already squats more than I like it to when I have it hooked up. But maybe another 300-400 lbs won't make too much of a difference.

I hear ya on the lead when you trailer. Last year we trailer the boat everywhere and I would have liked to use lead bags but didn't want to beat on my trailer or 1/2 ton truck. This year however we leased a boat storage unit about 5 mins from the water so we may begin looking to add a little lead ballast here and there. I don't know the do's and don'ts of trailering with lead but I imagine you don't want it near the bow to increase tongue weight on the trailer.

When you trailer lead, put it mid ship between trailer axles.
