Portable gas tank recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good gas tank to bring to the lake for filling up the boat? We only put in ethanol free gas in the boat and trailer the boat 1/2 mile to the lake. The closest ethanol free gas station is 10 miles away. So we are looking for a gas tank or tanks to fill up the boat while on the trailer prior to trailering. Gravity fed tanks wont work due to the height. I am guessing 4 5 gallon tanks is the way to go but all the new tanks are the Jerry jugs due to the EPA and makes it difficult to pour into the boat. Any recommendations. I realize gravity fed would be great but dont want to fill up at the local boat launch because it gets to crowded.

Go with the motorcycle racing cans. Never leaks and has the hose so no spillage. I was lazy and built a pump-o-matic so I plug into the boat and let it pump away.

+1 for the siphon shaker. I bought one for my father in law since his pontoon boat lives on the lift at the lake house. Works awesome and you can just keep buying the same cheap gas cans as always.

Just set a towel on the sundeck cover, put gas can on towel, put hose in fuel fill line and put the metal end in the jug and shake until it starts flowing. Have a beer while you wait.

I have 5 or 6 of the VP racing fuel jugs. they're great and the VP ones JUST fit under the hard tonneau on the F150.

I have these jegs VP fuel cans with hose, you can use a a small hose syphon. The cans work great. The hose is long enough you can stick the end in then tank and lay the can on the side if you don't want to deal with the syphon.

Just get some regular ol gas cans. But here’s the trick... tractor supply sells non certified nozzles! Just screw then on and it’s like the old days. And way cheaper than motorcycle jugs.
We use them around the ranch on all the cans.

I ordered the Flow-Fast 21 gallon system with 4 extra gas cans last week from overtons. A total of 63 gallons and it says it pumps 8 gallons per minute. Looks like the way to go but it’s expensive, it was either this or a custom made fuel trailer for me. I’m not messing around with 5 gallon cans when it comes to a 65 gallon gas tank.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the shake siphon idea but doesnt the portable tank still have to be above the boat gas tank? Would it work with the gas tank on the ground and the boat on the trailer? I also like the idea of fast pour nozzles avail from tractor supply.

Yes, the cans would have to be elevated. We put a towel on the sundeck and then set the can up there. It works great. I started with the shaker siphon mentioned above and it works great. It's a game changer - I will never pour fuel cans again. But then... I learned about this: https://www.turbosiphon.com/ and it is amazingly fast. I only wish they had a small diameter nozzle on the end so that it could fit in normal automotive fillers - I need to do my own mod.

Get a fuel pump, put on a power connector and a couple of hoses. I do in situ fueling of my motor home where I may be pumping 40 gallons at a time.

That is a cool system. And yes, pricey.

Probably 60# per can. That dolly would be nice on the dock.

+1 Lots of old school gas can conversion kits available on Ebay as well. I have both motorcycle jugs and old school gas cans and the VP jugs are way better for pouring but less easy to store / transport.

Isn’t pulling the boat out and going to the gas station easier? Than lugging 13 5 gallon jugs?

Or just get a transfer tank for your pick up bed.
Most start at 36 gallons.

My boat is at our dock in the summer so trailering is not an option. Over a weekend I usually burn about 20 to 50 gallons and can get away with 10 5 gallon gas fillups . I have 6 cans so that is 2 trips to the gas station. I figure I'm saving at least 10 dollars per can.

Too funny as the best camping and boating is where no one is around and for that to happen civilization as we know it is literally hours away. It was common to have 8-10 gas cans in the boat on a camping trip to be used boating and the remainder going into the motorhome for the trip back. All of the cans were empty on the trip back home. It was interesting when I got gas at Costco and pulled out all the cans from under the tonneau cover knowing I won't be going anywhere for about 20 minutes and at least two resets of the pumps.

If you're spending $13 on the replacement spout, you might as well just get the VP jugs. Just my opinion. I love how the VP jugs fit perfectly under the tonneau cover of the F150.

I have the turbo siphon. it works well. sometimes I'll use it, and sometimes I'll just pour straight from the VP jugs. It's damn quick for the vp jugs to dump 6 gallons through the 1" hose.

Maybe... but how many gas cans do most people have already? If you’re anything like me, 4-5 just in the garage. Buy one nozzle and move it from can to can. Our tractor holds 15 gallons of diesel. That’s what we do.

LOL. But not if you bought the right ones in the first place! I had 2 VP cans from motorcycle track days before I ever owned a boat. I only ever had 2 "regular" 5 gallon cans, and one just cracked and is worthless now.

Very understandable... everyone has different toys. I sold all my Track style cans or gave them away with bikes over the years as I got out of MX. The honest truth of how we’ve ended up with so many over the years is the hurricanes down here. We usually buy a few extra generators and sell them when everyone runs out. And having gas cans with fuel is like gold.
Back when Harvey hit I was in Dallas at Lear recurrent training. I stopped in tractor supply in Corsicana on my way home and bought all 15 gas and diesel cans they had in stock, filled them up with cheap gas and diesel up north and brought it home. Sold some, kept some since we were way unprepared when Harvey took a turn back to Houston. Diesel is always the first thing to run dry down here in an emergency. They focus on getting gas back for the general public.
I store at least 30 gallons of diesel in my shop for myself if something were to happen. And I hate the new cans with a passion. So a $13 nozzle every now n then doesn’t hurt lmao!

I clicked on the link to the turbo siphon and it says they are out of stock. Where else did anyone have luck finding these. They seem pretty awesome. I checked amazon, eBay, walmart, everywhere. Even a google search comes up with out of stock on all the search results.
