Impeller is stuck

Tried to pull my water pump impeller the other day, it's stuck in there real good. I was using pliers and all the leverage I could get on it. Any ideas? I'm thinking spray penetrating oil on the spline.

Also, my boat overheated the other day, hence I assumed the impeller was bad. I was feeling it with my hand, and all the vanes still seemed intact. Any idea what else could cause the overheating? I've never had an issue before with overheating in any boat other than a bad impeller. Is there a way to test if the motor is getting water or not? Maybe my thermostat is bad?

Check your water intake to make sure nothing is clogging it up. If it's not that then replace the Tstat and the impeller. Spray wd40 on it and then bump your engine over a few times and it should losen up.

I replaced my impeller earlier this year and what a pain it was to get out. I bought a can of silicon spray, similar to WD-40 and sprayed a bunch all around the impeller then let it sit for a bit. Came back sprayed some more then it slowly worked itself out. Took a lot of effort and getting any leverage is not easy, I think my forearm was bruised for at least a week. Sprayed the new one with the same silicon and it slide right in.

The overheating issue may be due to the impeller, not sure though. Is the oil good?

check your transmission cooler. Weeds like to clog the screen inside that canister. For the impeller, spend the $ and get a puller from skidim.....money well spent.

spray WD40, bump the engine, and repeat. Worked like a charm for me. Check the water strainer if you have one, could be clogged.

the wd40 is the easiest way, I just help a friend change his. Just make sure to use lots of wd40. Then it will slide right out.

x2 on a bunch of wd40 and letting it sit as well as viewing kane's link from above.

Use a couple of the paint can opening pry tools. I keep them in the boat with the spare impeller. They work wonderfully for leveraging those recalcitrant things out.

LOL those dern recalcitrant impellers!

I had a can of penetrating spray near the dock I forgot about, sprayed that crap in there, bumped the motor a few times, and was able to yank it out. I didn't even think of this before because I never had this issue, but my hoist is shallower than last year so I kind of have to power it on and off the hoist a little, and I'm on top of some serious muck. Must be when I go in reverse, all that muck churns up and gets sucked up. Strainer was relatively clogged. Cleaned it out, new impeller in, ran like a champ!

But then I had somebody come look at it, and make an offer, and my boss is coming to look tomorrow...so sadly, I might be selling her after all to appease the soon to be ex so she can get some cash for this divorce.

Anybody try an impeller removal tool? Which one?

I used the same process earlier this year on my impeller and finally got it out, but what a pain. Was thinking a threaded tool to get better leverage would make it easy & if it was inexpensive, the it would be worth it for the annual replacement.

I have not had a big issue using WD40, engine bump and 2 paint can openers.

I just used pliers, came out pretty easily after the penetrating oil and engine bumps

Newty showed me this trick last weekend. A little WD40, bump the engine, and then use the two paint can openers to slip in to the back side and work it out. It still sucked getting the impeller out, but it worked. Once we saw some of the fins were broken off, we just used vice grip pliers to pull it the rest of the way out.

Wouldn't silicone be preferable to WD-40 or penetrating oil if you had any intention of re-using the impeller?

I would think that petroleum based lubricants wouldn't be the optimal solution. I used spray silicone personally to remove mine. it was missing a chunk so it's done anyway. That said, before I took out the silicone, I managed to chew up the brass pretty good with the needle nose vise grips. Looking forward to an impeller puller.

Also to get the new one in, I did the trick where you put a zip tie around the outside to get the vanes bending and make it fit in the hole easier. as the impeller slides in, the zip tie ultimately slides off. The new impeller should come with a little tube of special lube in the package (mine did) so again, I would personally avoid the petroleum based lubes...

Humm that is a great trick. I wonder were you heard that from :). It slips in easier when you use two of the fattest zip ties you can find.

I can't remember exactly where I heard it, but it was from a guy that has AMAZING taste in boat colors...

glycerin gel works well for these types of things, and keeps your hands nice and soft too....

I just use dish soap

The best lube is KY jelly. Also great for slipping into the tight dry suit, then leaves no residue after you've slipped in the water. KY is the barefooters choice of lube.

Now at the checkout line when the cashier asks if you are going to have a fun night you can respond with "My impeller is stuck in its case and I need some jelly to pull it out."

KY is very useful and there is all sorts of things you can use it for. I carry some in my first aid kit for my Nasopharyngeal airways since KY is much less then the lube that comes with them and it is the same type of lube.

And yes Mike I have KY on the boat.
