Which motor? 400 or 450
Considering a new Supra SA or SL but wanted to gauge which motor to go with between the 400 and 450. Normally the crew is small (4-6 people) and more of a surfer than wakeboard these days. As of now the plan is to run stock weight and then add a little lead later if needed but no intention of sacking it out.
Is the 400 enough or 450 recommended?

400 is all you need at low elevation even at full load.
$8400 is a ton of money for 49 ft.lbs of torque.

If you’re getting a new boat and you can get the 1.76 transmission with the 400 that’s likely just fine. If you’re getting the 1.5 and you’re a heavy surfer it becomes a tougher question—and would be a no on the 400 in an SL for me.

The SL is only 150# and 9” more than the SA.
I believe the intent of the 450/1.76 is a low cost high elevation option versus the 575 supercharged.

I have the 400 in my mondo, yah, its a smaller lighter boat but wow is the power incredible. With the right gearing, and prop on the supra i wouldn't see the 400 as an issue.

I have owned 2 Supras, a 17 SA400 with the Acme 2775 prop and now a 18 SL550 with the Acme 2247 prop My buddy has a 19 SL450.
My SA had 650 pounds of lead and with 4 adults and 2-3 kids it always struggled when the ballast was full to get on plane. I would have to move more people to the bow, drain ballast and switch to the advanced wakeboard profile to engage auto-launch and still it would take forever to plane out.
The 550 is obviously a different story, but my buddies 2019 SL450 is night and day different than my 400 was.
If you can demo both the 400 and 450 I would load them all the way up and see what you think. Personally I would not buy the 400 motor in a SA or SL, but I would be happy with the 450...it's a big noticeable difference over the 400.

Here in Houston the 400 works fine. My 17 SA pulls to 11.9-12.2 surfing no problem with Enzos and 600# lead, with a 2419 prop. The old 2775 would struggle if there’s more than 5-6 people in the boat.
If you’re gonna run stock bags and lead, the 400 will do everything you want it to.
Grab 750#, that’s what the PWT boat was running!

It really just depends on how hard you want the motor to work......I know Rinker's orders most of their SLs with the 400 and they say they do just fine. I would say it kind of depends on if you are the type to trade boats every 2-3 years or if you keep them 10years+. If you trade in every few years and you want to you might give the 400 a go but if you will be keeping for a while then I would go 450. That being said we went with the 450 in our Makai and it is amazing!! The 450's performance (motor, trans, & prop) is a noticeable difference over the 400. The HP and Torque increase is nice but the kicker is the 1.76:1 transmission. Not only does it have a more favorable gear ratio it also allows you to run a larger prop which is a plus as well. Some of the other manufacturers have already gone to something similar to a 1.76:1 with some going to a 2:1. It is definitely some $$ to move up to the 450 but worth every penny IMO.
