Brand New to Moomba

First time boat buyer here! Just closed on Saturday. Super excited. This forum was extremely helpful in giving us some peace of mind about purchasing.

Bought an 08 Moomba Mobius LSV that had a lot of aftermarket upgrades and loaded out with ballasts.

I am a DIY person with everything home, and most things auto, but have a little trepidation about boating oil changes, transmission, winterization, etc....

Also hopeful to be pointed in some good directions as far as making sure we have everything we need including being water ready and gear ready.

Any good resources or places y'all go for surfboards, wakeboards, etc...

If anyone is in the North Texas area, I'd love to make some connections! Spent a lot of time around other people's boats but never had the chance to really regularly operate one and this is our first to own, so I have a lot to learn! This seems like a pretty fun community in here though.

If you're new to inboard read up about techniques for handling them, it's a very different experience than driving and IO or Outboard.

Maintenance is easy enough, if you can do automotive you can do boats its just more of a pain in the ass to get in there and get it done.
Spend a few days just reading through old threads on here there's tons of good info.

No worries that's why this forum and others like it exist.

I grew up with outboards offshore, so the switch to an inboard was a bit of a pill to swallow.
Now it's second nature but it just requires a bit more thought than other engine orientations.

The boat will only reverse to the right and you don't really have control of it, it just meanders backwards and right.
So you have to plan for this any tine you are going to have to reverse always make sure you have room on the stbd stern to maneuver.

On a boat ramp with more than one slot try to go to the right one to avoid the clusterf*** that ensues if you're trying to reverse off at the same time as the guy in the bass boat on your right.

When docking always dock so that your stbd side is on the dock, this way you can nose in and then rock the throttle back and forth to pull yourself in smoothly rather than just slamming it home.

"Because most single inboards naturally pull to starboard when in reverse, it is easiest to dock to that side. This also allows the skipper to grab the dock if necessary. With the throttle just in gear, approach the dock at an angle—about 30 to 40 degrees. Gently ease the bow to within a couple of feet of the dock, come out of gear to slow momentum, then with the wheel turned to starboard, use a bit of reverse to swing the transom into the dock. If the stern is swinging in too fast, a slight bump of the throttle forward, with the wheel turned starboard and then back to center, will -correct it."

There are some good YouTube videos on how to handle a boat - docking and while surfing/wake boarding to pickup a rider.

By learning those, i.e. staying away from power turns, you will make the others on the water happy too. Fit right in.

Congrats, that is a great looking boat. We had an 07 LSV up until a few months back and it was a great boat, never had any issues with it. You will love it. There are a million things you can do to improve/upgrade it but for now i would say get some hours on it and get familiar with it before you start getting crazy with the upgrades. When you are ready let us all know and we will gladly help you spend your $$$.

More details on the boat please..... Did you buy privately or from a dealer? How many hours on it? etc

Sometimes paint colors and scheme can really date a pre owned boat 10 years old or so. This white however is fabulous and timeless. Congrats! Something tells me this won’t be your last Moomba!!

Love the interest! And also awesome to hear everyone thinks it's timeless! We loved it and did NOT think it looked old. It's been very well cared for. Lakehouse owner that had it covered in climate storage on private property. My biggest concern is that I can really only justify and afford outdoor storage right now - we are just lake rats without friends that have a boat so we took matters into our own hands. I can't fit it in my garage so I'm going to have to get creative with fully covering it when storing.

It's an 08 LSV with 438 hours. Purchased on consignment at Slolam ski and shop in Lewisville, TX. The previous owner literally has ballast sac's in every storage bin - overflow bags - the dealer thought it was probably plumbed for close to 3,000 lbs. Got two 1,100 lb bags in the bag and the rest throughout the boat. Wakeshaper installed and has wetsounds aftermarket speakers and subs and EQ mixer. Really excited to be rocking on the lake. Have a ton to learn, but excited to spend a couple days out on the water and get comfortable and then learn to surf!

Glad to hear the 07 model didn't have many problems. For the care it's had, I'm hoping to have this boat a long time.

We live kind of smack dab in between Lake lewisville and grapevine - I think we will probably gravitate to Lewisville just because we live in Lewisville, but with it being trailered, we want to try out lakes and figure out what we like. What like do you spend the majority of your time on?

We had close to 750 hrs and it ran like a champ. Take good care of it and do the yearly maintenance and you should be good to go.

agreed. our '06 supra launch 20ssv was the most trouble free boat we have owned..... and one that I could actually turn a wrench on pretty easy.

congrats on the purchase! it looks like a really nice machine. I love the all white!

Ray Hubbard is our main lake. Lewisville is fun and you will enjoy it. Lewisville is the scene for Dfw. Busy weekends. You will see several fellas from here at Lewisville on the regular. Ray Roberts is not far if you want a peaceful day.

Decal remover wheels do work very well.
Keep it low and slow so as not to overheat the gel but they make a hard job easy.
Just be aware that after years you're likely to have different colored gel coat underneath.

I am not sure the exact type of wakeshaper. It had been put on aftermarket - fixed piece on both sides with a plate that rotates out and down to your desired adjustments. I'm going to run back to the boatyard today to get some measurements so I'll take pics. I need to get some covers for the wetsound tower speakers since they are sitting outside right now.

Does anyone have any good ideas or suggestions on best practices for fully covering a boat when stored outside? Not sure how worried I need to be about trying to keep the hull away from sunlight?

The sunlight will fade your gelcoat over time. I had custom canvas flaps that came with my boat that I attached to the sides and they hung down to about the trailer level. I am sure they were a custom job, but I think any canvas shop or custom upholstery place could make something similar.

That is a fantastic idea! Thanks for sharing. My boat has a cover for the front and back (2 pieces). I wonder if that would be sufficient to add side flaps like you have here to supplement the existing cover.

The decal remover works really well. I ditched the kangaroo and moved the registration and numbers a tad. I did notice my gelcoat was a bit darker where the decal was but I was able to buff that out with a 3M pad and some elbow grease.

You need to make sure you plan a trip south to the Trinity River in Riverside. There is a place that has tent/RV camp sites or cabins right on the water called Bethy Creek Resort. The Trinity provides buttery smooth glass for miles and miles. It's been the sole location of our Texas Moomba/Supra Jam every year since 2010.

If my work quarantine situation doesn't change I won't be organizing it. So I guess that depends on if someone else wants to step up and put it together, as of now I will be gone for work the last 3/4 of July, all of August, and probably the first week and a half of Sept.

It takes a lot of time to organize those events. Fun, but busy work. I've done it for other types of sportsman events.
It helps if you have a good "committee" to help on the different aspects - donations, dinners, raffles, people asking questions, thank yous etc.

Either way, decreases odds of contracting a severe case. Getting science or medical to agree on anything is a stretch.

I have elderly parents who are otherwise reasonably healthy for 81 and 85, they got their vaccines today, first shots.

I will feel better and relax a bit when they can more safety do things for themselves. I handle their shopping and errands the past 9 months to keep their risks low to exposure.
