Camping for Labor Day weekend at Prineville Reservoir. This was our setup:

Smoke from the forest fires came in midday Saturday.

Lake Billy Chinook Labor Day weekend. A fraction of the people that are normally there, I guess the smoke kept most people at home. Didn't bother us Friday or Saturday as it was above us but settled onto us on Sunday.

As many of you know, the Columbia River gorge has two big fires burning on the outskirts of town. The fires are less than 40 miles from my house. Since the weekend we've had tons of smoke, horrible air quality and ash raining down on us covering our cars and boats...
The fires have been burning hot and FAST and actually jumped the Columbia River to the Washington side. A smoldering stick that was 8" long and an inch in diameter found its way to a gas station 2 miles away.
This isn't my picture, but gives an idea of what's happening.

Yesterday morning, I woke to the boat covered in ash, even though it's parked under the carport. Before I could leave for work, I took out the shop vac and sucked up as much as possible. I then had to break out the Vinyl Sauce to clean the ash that smeared onto the seats. Finally I threw on the snap cover because I had to get my butt into work... But you could see ash falling from the sky like snowflakes.
Last night, the winds shifted and the ash was MUCH less prevalent. I decided that my lungs could handle a little exposure and my wife, a buddy, and I took the boat out tonight. It was like having a DENSE fog, but it was all smoke. And with the river East of us being shut down to ALL river traffic, there were few commercial barges to be found. It was so empty on the river that it was kinda spooky. And the water was so smooth that I was able to slalom ski right from the boat launch on the main channel.
Yeah, I felt a little crazy and was just laughing at us playing on the river in the middle of all this. But that's how I roll. Make the best of a crazy situation.
Normally in this spot, you could see Mt Hood prominently displayed in the background. But not this week.

The one thing that took me by surprise was the surface of the river was COATED with burnt pine needles. They were everywhere, forming a dense film in many places. miles and miles of pine needles.

All in all, it was a crazy night. Yeah, air quality is rated as unhealthy, but I don't smoke or have asthma and won't suffer any lasting long term effects.
Motored back to the dock on crazy smooth water and covered the boat again for the drive home. Definitely an adventure.
This was at 6pm, looking due east on a "cloudless" 88 degree day with all the dense smoke. Again, Mt Hood should be prominent in the background.

And looking west with the sun trying to shine brightly through the smoke.

Haven't been on the water since I just about lost my boat in a wind storm the middle of August. Got caught out in eastern Washington on the river with 30mph winds with 9 on board about 2 miles from anything. Dodging 6ft swells the best I could but still taking waves clear up over the windshield. Took on enough water that we had cushions floating and were using the handheld tsunami 1200 as an emergency bilge. Stereo is fried or at least partially - I think all 3 exile amps took a swim. I haven't done much looking into it yet honestly - haven't had the stomach for it yet. Biggest scare I've had on the water in 10+ years - I think 2 more over the bow would have been the end of the MobiusV.
The fires have been a big distraction. Earlier this week we had some relatives who live in the area evacuated at 3am and showed up on our doorstep with a few keepsakes and their pets. This is what it looked like on their road the night they left.

My oldest daughter turned 8 today and when we asked what she wanted to do she said "the lake". Atta girl! Today was first time I was able to get some water pics of the new ride.

was caught a little by surprise. but the 73 degree water was warmer than the air temp in the low 60s.
Rain? Yup, but We just kept surfing.

Great colors on that SE sitting on the water with the sun hitting it!!
Do you have to throw water on the floor before walking on it?

Went a little garage crazy this weekend...

So far the flooring has been great. No need for water. My kids or switching riders keeps it damp and cool. With that said, I can see where certain circumstances it might need some water.
I was having to take carpet out almost every trip because of the smell and it just could not get dry. I won't be going back again.

Last week the ash from the forest fires subsided enough that I took the boat out. As you can see, the smoke from the fires was still prevalent (that's NOT fog). And the whole surface of the water was filled with floating pine needles. But it was just crazy fun to have the entire river to myself. The Interstate freeway has been closed for over a week. Even commercial river traffic was closed further upstream. It's very rare that it's smooth enough to ski the main channel of the Columbia River right from the launch.

Out again on Saturday evening. Got the first rain that we've seen in months. Needed for our forest fires, so I didn't complain. We just kept on surfing.
Sideways is fun

Wife having fun on a night surf. The water smoothed out so much after the rain passed that she took another set (even after changing into dry clothes!)
She's hooked.

that's a great point, hopefully you have a strainer installed.
Was wondering the same. I would guess the hull would push them to the side for the most part.
going fast, maybe.
we plugged up in the end of a canyon in lake powell from a bunch of floater stuff on the water, idling, had to take the lines from the intake to the engine off and clean stuff out. (what the floater stuff was, is a completely new thread discussion). engine heated up over temp really fast and shut to limp mode and we stopped etc. running fine since.
I've been watching the temp gauge carefully!
At idle, the pine needles weren't anywhere close to under the water enough to get near the intakes. When emptying the ballast, I saw none come out (I have above water line draining on all my pumps). They are remarkably buoyant.
Horrible form but still like the pictures.

I checked the transmission cooler and maybe one pine needle was in there. a couple small pieces of grit that I probably sucked up at the launch at some point. But other than that, pretty good.
That said, here's a video of what the pine needles looked like in the middle of the river that day. (they're all gone now BTW. swept out to sea).
