Strainer Question ?

I’m going to install a strainer on my Outback LS DD, and have a question about were / how to configure the strainer.

My water pick-up line runs from the under the motor mount into the trans cooler.

I know it should go prior to the trans cooler, but is it installed using straight barbed fittings in and out of the strainer or 90’s?

I saw a picture that someone posted of a v-drive and it looks like it 90’s in and out.

Any help or a picture of a DD setup would great.
