pontoon boat rebuild

well, finally finished the stereo upgrade on the supra, so we picked up the tooner that my sis and her bf bought last month. it's in sad shape cosmetically, but has good logs, good supports and a solid 50hp johnson. they bought all new carpet and furniture and we are going to rebuild her from the frame up. new wood. prior owners left it out in the snow, so it's a mess right now..
will post as we make progress. my truck lost it's space to this beast, so hoping to be finished the end of january so I can get my garage back, but we'll see....

the interior shots.. pretty sad shape.. think it's around an 88. old owners laid new carpet a couple of years ago and just used the home depot indoor/outdoor stuff, and it has been at the marina with no cover for 7-8 years, so it's bad..
all the old furniture is going in the trash..

Funny how your Supra is poking its bow out. You must have a L shapped garage.

no, moomba, standard 3 car, but reversed(u just can't see the 3rd door). the single bay is closest to the house and is only 22ft deep. the double is on the outside, with the left side being 25ft deep and the right side being 37ft deep.
boat wouldn't fit any other way than across the single bay and into the double. still allows us plenty of room to work around the tooner..

Check out Overton's & West Marine, i believe they both sell everything you need to rebuild a pontoon as far as hardware, furniture & carpet. The flooring itself is probably marine plywood i'm sure and can be had through most large lumber yards.

This is so cool, I really want to do a pontoon houseboat project.

the garage has been great to work on this in. fully insulated so running the heater for 20-30 minutes and it's nice and toasty. 10ft ceilings so you can walk around on the deck upright and the length is perfect..

the decking came from home depot at around $55/sheet. he ordered the furniture from pontoon specialties. no idea on price, but it looks real nice. have pics once we get there...

tough to see and I'll have to take some better pics, but the logs were covered in brown stains and someone had etched "margaritaville" in one side. took greg no time with a buffer and some scotchbrite pads to get them shining again. they need some hand work to finish them off and won't look new, but the difference is night and day and they really look fantastic. look at the first 2 pics on page 1 and you can see the scum line across it. it's completely gone on one side....

Wow, you don't mess around. Got a lot done already it what seems like not a lot of time. Love the progress pics, keep 'em coming! One of the pluses of this kind of project is that someone else is paying all the bills for materials :)

Quite the project. It should be pretty nice when it's done. One project I have always wanted to do is convert or start from scratch a trailer-able houseboat 30-36' . Mostly for lake Powell or Navajo lake in Nm. It seems like I would need a partner to do that , for funding and labor. It would work great for Powell since the offshore storage is a lot more reasonable than a slip or buoy. Then you don't have to sit at home and worry what it is doing out on the buoy when it is blowing 50-70mph out in the field with no breakwater. Launch and retrieve with a heavy duty pickup is a good thing.

removing the 25 year old stickers. the 2 owners going at it with a heat gun and lots of elboe grease. took the panels to a local sign/wrap shop and they are going to wrap the outside with new vinyl. planning on doing a logo and striping it here..

well, feel bad as I have been slacking in posting pics, but have had too much going on to get around to it, and computer access has been spotty lately, but the boat is finally about done. here's the latest shots as it's being towed to the boat shop. the engine has a couple of small issues to button up and it'll be ready for the water..
there's still a couple of small cosmetic issues left to finalize and no word yet on a large logo and some striping, but the major work is done.. to anyone wanting to take this project on, it really wasn't too tough, just need a lot of room and some well thought out designs.. hoping for many nice days to come on the water....

shot across the front. the front 10ft is all open and has 3 spots for the 2 fishing chairs to attach and a table between 2 of them. plan is to use low-slung deck chairs when not fishing that will fold up and out of the way..

actually, the stereo consists of 2 pairs of polk db651's picked up on the cheap this winter, and the sub, amp and deck out of my supra, so I think he's in the stereo around 150bucks counting the wiring and wood..

would be interesting to know the total spent on the project. boat was $1500 and I'm guessing that they are in it around 4500-4700 total including boat purchase. not too bad for what is essentially a brand new boat and the engine is at the shop getting a once-over, so will be as good as new :)

sled-looks like you took the minimalist approach :) is that big orange thing the downrigger for fishing??

Say what you will, but there is not much more fun than a long day on a pontoon with about 10 of your closest buddies. I can remember visiting my great Uncle on Lake Norman in North Carolina growing up and having the absolute time of my life on what had to be a pontoon from the late 70s. (I am 29)

This one looks great! So great in fact, I am getting an itch to look for a good deal on one. But I need to keep in mind my wife would literally punch me right in the kisser if I came home with an old pontoon to restore. :)

I agree, in fact we are getting a pontoon for general floating around with friends and family to take some of the pressure off our Moomba. Much easier to hang out and snack and swim off a really nice pontoon.
