I've heard that dealing with the starter is a royal pain and was told that on a car you rarely lubricate the distributor cam and getting to the bendix is tough. Who is doing this or having this done annually? A risk not to?

Not neccessary because for one the ignition is electronic and you don't have the cam wiper the old points systems had, hence the reason for lubing. Two, the lubing of a starter bendix was again an old school thing as starters were a lot less dependable and way less reliable than the new systems.

I ride in salt and therefore grease my bendix annually. Its not really a pain to remove, just 2 bolts and the electrical connections.
