In the ski locker of my 08 LSV, underneath the ballast, there is a plastic mesh-like pad. It's a nice buffer between the ballast and the fiberglass below, but I noticed that it smells something fierce. I took it out, let it dry, and tried to hit it with some ammonia - but that didn't seem to help.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good cleaner for something like this. It's just got all sort of gnarly-ness in it!

Thanks Ed.

I tried to pour a mixture of bleach/water on it in the driveway, but that didn't seem to work. I'll try to do the soak thing and see if I can't get it to mellow out on the stink.

Put a solution of simple green and water in a flat tub or container and let it sit over night and it will no longer smell.

Took it out-dripped nasty stuff all over the boat as it was heavy and slimy-stunk something fierce, washed it, let it sit in the sun to dry and its now sitting on the garage floor under the boat. No plans to put it back in. Now I just pull the ballast bag out and let it all dry out. The ski locker actually drys out now.

i did the same as daze, i just took it out and through it away. mine also had oil all over it from a leaking oil sending unit from the factory. also plugged the ski locker so that water from the bilge does not come forward.

Ditto. I took mine out permanently after using it once. Now I completely wipe the ski locker floor dry when putting the boat away and I figure I can get extra 10 lbs or so more water in the front sac :)

Huh, guess I never really thought about scrapping it altogether. There's really no need for it I suppose. I guess it's not like the ballast tank needs "cushioning" or any sort of support!

I suppose it's in there more for a buffer between the bag and the fiberglass, and might provide some protection if you were to put a ski in there or something... though I don't plan on putting one of those in there!!
