View Full Version : Dumbest thing ever witnessed on the water

Here is a place to post the dumbest thing you have ever seen on the water. Must be something you actually saw yourself. No second hand...

I'll start:

Last weekend the local party cabin - mostly 20-30 year old males - were on the pontoon on Sunday afternoon. Doing probably 20 mph with about 10 people on the boat. Three of them were sitting on the front deck with their feet in the water doing the 'pretend barefoot' thing - which is actually pretty fun, although illegal in most states these days.

We are watching from across the lake, which on our lake is about 400 yards (or less). I mentionted to everyone on our dock that it is fun but dangerous and illegal, and the next second - someone inside the fence on the pontoon reaches over and PUSHES one of the guys off the front deck.

We were all stunned. In my book that is attempted murder. Fortunately the driver killed the engine immediately and the kid surfaced about 40 feet behind the boat. Apparently intact.

Top that ....
Dave

Ok the guy that pushed the guy in should now sit on the bow, get the boat up to speed and have someone push him in! But don't cut the engine, force all of the other low pants wearing idiots to stand on the back of the boat and watch what comes up!

Yeah I was young and I did some stupid things (shot a bird to a law enforcement officer) but never did I risk someone elses life!

Dave

When I was in college some friends and I were on the lake skiing. There was actually no alcohol involved. We had 2 boats out that day. I was in the water next to one of the boats when one of my "friends" decided to come up real fast in his boat then turn quick so that his boat would spray the other boat. He got a little too close and missed crushing my head between the 2 by about a foot. To close. When I got over the shock of almost being killed I cut loose on him and it never happend again.

That may top yours.

watched 3 guys in a boat last summer, older mid-70's tri-hull with a waketower on it, put one of the guys up on the top of the tower and they proceeded to try and buck him off it. guy was driving like he had a tube on the back of the boat. kid on top of the tower was around 18-20 and 160 lbs I'd guess. that much weight that high up sure made that boat look like it was ready to tip on it's side...

Hmmm. I've seen the guy with the roller trailer drop his boat on the ramp and bust the lower unit clean off. I've seen jet-skiers trying to jump the wake within 10 feet of beginning kids skiing. I've seen the lady on the beach smoking within 3 feet of 40 gal of gas in the 100 degree heat. I've seen a guy try to go out the Sebastian Inlet in FL in a john boat with about a 6 HP motor on a windy day with the tide coming in. Not personally, but somewhere on here is the link to the video of the wakeboarders in the Everglades riding over the backs of gators.

Gator jumping is fun and safe. You just have to make sure you do not go first. After the gators are full from your friends or x-friends you are safe to jump them. I mean after you eat a big meal it is nap time. I would think the same goes with gators.

I had a close call last year. Surfing behind my boat having a good time on a long weekend (water was terrible so no wakeboarding just surfing). At the end I take the rope, cut out heel side charge the surf wave and just do a dive in head first. I copme up to see a Seadooer coming at me at 40 mph. he was so stupid or drunk he didn't even notice I jumped off and rode right over me. At the last second I went under the water and kinda ducked to the side just out of the way. literally inches from dying. Inches!

Wow some people just have zero respect for anything. I mean how close he had to cut behind the boat to almost hit a wakesurfer is unreal. I mean your not even 10 feet behind the boat going 10 MPH. Even if you jumped off that is way too close for any boat to come. If it was me I would have gotten in the boat and tracked that person down.

We were at a local boat launch and had just come out. The next guys in behind us had been out on the lake a long time, and alchohol was involved. They had a small pickup to pull their old tri-hull with. One guy in the boat one in the truck. Guy back down, get out ouf the truck, leave door open and apparently in gear, or as a minimum, no parking brake.

End result - by the time the guy got back into the truck the water was up to the top of the seats. We did not stick around to see the extraction process.

OK i'll play! I got two, this ones kinda long and it's off/on/off the water! I actually posted this one on WW about three weeks ago and forgot to post it here i think?

So what is it with all the inconsiderate, it's all about me moron douches!? Went out to our local lake, Don Pedro, and on the way hit the last gas stop to top the boat. I filled up and pulled out of the way, had to back away cause some moron backed in in front of me and blocked my exit!

Any way my buddy pulls in where i was, filled his boat and flipped around to fill the truck and some total douche driving a black hummer towing an older VLX DD flew in the driveway and tried to snipe the pump before he got fully pulled up! His wife was blocking the drive until he got there so these morons whip around to the other side and smash the trailer into the steel hoop pump guard! Takes them 5 minutes to un-entangle themselves! We bail the gas stop and i'm thinking i don't these idiots anywhere near me.

We launch at Pedro, and pull over by the auxilary dock waiting for the rest of our 4 boat group to launch and while waiting i see the gas douches come down the ramp, cutting off others and take 10 minutes to put the freaking boat in! They proceed to tie a donut tube to the front of the tower almost blocking all forward view!

So they head out while we're waiting for our last boat to launch but fifteen minutes later their back! Forgot the plug and damn near swamped the boat! Shoulda seen how much water came out! They tie the ramp up for 20 minutes now!

Were outta there and spend the full day on the water, coming in at 6:30pm and there's the gas douche boat tied to the dock! They're all standing on the dock, tying it up waiting for the trailer! Hummer dude finally shows at the top and goes around everyone and literally cuts off my buddies wife backing into her lane! Everyone yells at him and he says, no lie, "My boats down there!" So's everyone else's azzbag!

So check 'em out, he back into lane 4 and then drags his boat with a rope across 4 lanes behind other trailers to get on his trailer! What a freaking douche!

I had hoped if gas douche read this maybe he'd get a clue, it'll never happen though.

Stupid people!

We spent this past July 4th week on Lake Shasta. It was windy a bit and when the water whips up from wind and boats it washes the red clay/dirt out into the water and hides obstructions. Well the lake was dropping anywhere from 6-12" a day and small land masses were popping up all over. Most were easily visible and fairly close to shore. I make it a rule to avoid any discolored areas, ya never know!

Well my brother-in-law cut a corner coming out of a cove to close to shore and hit one and he immediately starting taking on water! Luckily a sheriff came by and towed him to shore were he beached it. Ripped the rudder backwards tearing a 6x6" hole in the bottom! Prop, strut and shaft gone! Amazingly the rudder was ok!

So the next day i go back with the wife and friends to see the scene and as were standing off about 60' an older Air Nautique is coming down the lake at around 35mph heading straight at it! We wave them off but they just wave back and keep coming and hit it sqaure on throwing the boat up 6' and it slams back into the water! Nobody was hurt amazingly and they motor very slow away ignoring our calls to beach and check it. Turns out it was a marina rental with four east indian guys who've never driven a boat!

Saw it later at the marina on a hoist and everything underneath was gone! I don't know how it even moved!

well this doesn't count as the dumbest thing ever on the water- but it's the dumbest thing I've ever been asked on the water. I was anchored in a cove swimming with my family and neighbors yesterday when some middle aged dude with a bunch of teenage girls in a mastercraft X star comes up and starts giving me crap about my boat- he started asking stuff like "did that outback come with a free steak?" and "did you have to go to australia to get that boat, mate?" I'm pretty sure he was just being a jerk but I wasn't even sure what to say- then I watched him almost sink his boat doing power turns. Well turns out he's an owner of a local business and those teenage girls are his "employees" with his wife and 2 daughters of course nowhere in sight.

Earlier this spring my neighbour at the lake is ferrying a big group of people over to her place for a hot tub party. Keep in mind this is 2 in the morning. 3 of the girls are lets say not petite, and one guy is in his sleeping bag pulled over his head like a condom. One of the small girls decides to jump up front (Oh yeah this is a 14 ft Jon boat with a 10 hp motor and 10 people). At about the same time, wave comes over the front. The boat starts to go down like a submarine. My neighbour driving at the back of the boat ends up 5 ft in the air as the slim girls (again used loosely) all plow to the front. Boat goes down and all end up in early may Wisconsin water. I had to lift the boat out with my barge and crane later.

I've got two.

1. Lake Lewisville Texas at Pier 121 4 or 5 years ago. A lady comes pulling up to the old gas dock in a big Carver, 40+ ft., flying bridge, the works. At about 30 feet from the dock she is coming in hot but at this point it was still a salvageable situation, she's hot but her angle is pretty good. Things then go from squirrelly to scary as she decides to kill the engines. I'd say she crashed into the gas dock at 5 or 6 mph in what must have been a 25,000 pound boat maybe more. The boat was really screwed up, the kids working the gas dock thought their lives were over. Connected to the old gas dock was a walkway flanked by drive in boat slips for the restaurant which is just down from the old gas dock. It's 50/60 or so feet from the gas dock to the restaurant drinks food and all manner of stuff flew off off tables onto the floor. People were literally screaming.

2. Same lake earlier this year sixty feet from my slip. Set up, dude buys a 42' cruiser, part of the deal is that the selling dealership will pay for slippage for 6 mos. The dealer makes the boat delivery on an extremely bad weather day, slips the boat, delivers the keys to the owner's home, and promptly forgets to pay the marina for the slippage. A few days later the owner shows up - unties the boat - gets in - starts it up - feels the elation as the boat moves forward, about four feet and it stops. He gives it some more throttle nothing but noise, more throttle still more noise.
He thinks crap I missed a line so he kills it walks around the deck and sees no lines. He gets back in fires it up and gives it a lot of gas.

This is the point where I hear a lot of motor noise, fiberglass ripping and metal screeching. And the boat rises by the nose and then crashes down and leaps forward.

The marina had put a security cable in front of the boat. The owner, who I now know a little and is a really nice man, just flat out didn't see it. His insurance man said it cost $135K to fix all the damage.

I would have given him the phrase that half of all x-star owners fear - "So let's see you wakeboard behind that x-star."

that or asked him to help me test the flare gun :) jk

I'm not sure the guy's fitness level would permit him even to tube behind his X star LOL and I'm not here to trash other makes but when I looked at an 08 X-1 I certainly couldn't find the $18K difference anywhere. In fact he asked me how deep it was because his didn't even have a depth gauge.

For about the next 6 months it was almost imposible to get her back surfing.

I was on a four sided dock in Idaho when a family drove too close to the dock and the little boy on skis slammed into the dock. His leg was cut really bad so we wrapped his leg in their towels and sent them on their way. It would take at least an hour to the nearest launch plus another hour for an ambulance (no phone coverage here) and I talked to the Ranger the next day and he survived the ordeal.

Yeah Im sure that wouldnt fly in other areas. This is Bama. The police welcome this type of "taking the law into your own hands". I gave him a chance, slowed down to a no wake, yelled at him to get the heck away, and then as soon as I took off again he started jumping the wake again. Then I got a little angry. Got pulled over by marine police last week for a fire extinguisher/life jacket check. Of course they found the paint gun, and my 9mm, but I have a concealed carry permit. Cop asked what the paintball gun was for and I explained it to him, he laughed and said, "at least we wont have to respond to any calls of people getting hurt from jumping wakes". This is the deep south, heart of dixie, this state votes 80% red at every election.

Couple of dumb stories for ya:

A parasail (oldschool mushroom style) required like 125 pound person to ride. My dad let me do it for my first time when I was about 8-10 years old, weighing ~70#. I was thinking, "yeah, sweet! Cool dad!" That was, until the wind came up, and even with the boat in reverse there was NO slack in the line :(. Can you say freaked out? he ended up going hand-over hand well over the 250 feet of line, since he lost it a coiuple times & had to try again ;) it wasn't long before I was back up though, it is amazing experience!

Oh, a few years later the guy came for a test ride, and it was really windy. Dad told him it was a bad idea, but he wanted to go anyways. Long story short: rope broke, ended up in trees with a broken arm, and still bought the 'chute!

because our lake is long and skinny when the wind whip up from the south the waves can get real large.... well it was a very nice day out except for the wind and these 2 youngs guys (18-20ish) and obviously drunk decide to head out in their 14 foot fishing boat....... they get about than 800 yards from the dock and take a wave over the bow.... so now their trying to turn around and limp it back...... get turned around and a whitecap crashes over the back completely swamping the boat... down it goes... these morons don't have lifejackets on and are obviously in trouble... at the time i just had my 18ft bayliner on the lift so i put in and went and got them.... rougher than crap and the one guys asks me if i think i could hook on to their boat and tow it in???? so it's sunk in 12feet of water and were going to tow it in how???? had a heck of a time getting my boat back on the lift without damaging it but managed.... then without so much as a thankyou these jokers dissappear.... our campground/cabin area is pretty small and i know pretty much everyone but i didn't recognize these guys... and no one has seen them since either!!

Then i find out it wasn't even their boat... they just took it on a whim.... no ones seen them since and that evening when it calmed down we went out with 3 pontoon boats and got the fisherboat out...

Years ago, two couples vacationing. Three of us rent Jet Skiis. Rookies all. I see my buddy and his wife side by side, racing. I come in from about 45 degrees and join the fray. She bails out of the race and veers left. T-bones me. I cart-wheel off the craft. No injuries to people or equipment (or none the rental guy noticed), but I can certainly understand how accidents happen on PWCs. Fast, eratic movements.

Years ago I was a teenaged Civil Service Life Guard working at an Army rec area. We also ran the boat dock and rented out bass boats, skiboats and pontoon boats. It is late on a Monday, it is cloudy and slow. No one is on the lake, no one is in the rec area. Me and 2 other lifeguards are shutting down for the evening when we see a boat drifting around the corner. It gets closer and we see a guy on his knees in the middle of the boat moving and jerking around? Then a girls head pops up. A few seconds later another girls head pops up. Hummmmmm......we walk to the end of the dock to get a better look. They see us and crank up the boat to come towards us. By then we figured out what they were doing and couldn't believe it!! Well they get to the dock and we meet 3 really drunk half naked people. They are seriously messed up. The girls didn't even know their tops were partially on. Ok me and the other 2 boy lifeguards didn't tell them either. Well they wanted something to drink so we show them the Coke machine. Actually we walked them all the way up to the office to show them. When they get back to the dock to get in the boat one girl gets in, the guy gets in and the other girl tripped and fell between the boat and the dock. The other girl cranks the outboard and gives it full throttle but with the wheel hard over. She almost cut the other girl to pieces as the end of the boat came around! Well the girl in the water is starting to struggle and panic but we weren't going to jump in to get her with the other girl driving around like a lunatic now coming back to get her. Luckily we had a pole and yelled for her to grap it and then pulled her up on the dock. We then got back away from the edge of the dock while waiting for the imment crash to happen as the other girl was coming back for the first girl. She did hit the dock hard and we heard the sound of fiberglass cracking but it wasn't too bad, the boat didn't sink. The guy in the boat was just laughing as they then motored off in the sunset to continue their fun day at the lake. I will never forget that day!
